Capitol Records was reported to have signed FN Meka, a virtual rapper described as AI-powered, in August 2022. The creators said AI was used in making the music, but the vocals were performed by a human studio musician. After criticism of the project’s content, Capitol Music Group said it had severed ties with FN Meka, effective immediately.

What happened with FN Meka and Capitol Records?

On August 23, 2022, Futurism reported that Capitol Records had added FN Meka to its lineup. The virtual artist project was associated with Factory New, and its release “Florida Water” featured Gunna, according to contemporary coverage.

The reported signing did not last. A report reproducing a statement attributed to Capitol Music Group said the company had “severed ties with the FN Meka project, effective immediately.” Chorus.fm reported the statement, attributing it through its account to The New York Times. The available reporting does not establish contract terms or provide a direct label announcement.

What did “AI rapper” mean in this case?

FN Meka was presented in coverage as a virtual celebrity and AI-powered rapper, but that label can obscure the people involved in making a track. Futurism reported the creators’ claim that AI informed the music, from lyrics to chord progressions. The same account said a human studio musician performed the vocals. The reporting does not provide technical documentation to independently verify how much of the composition or production was generated by AI, so it would be inaccurate to say an AI itself performed the vocal.

Anthony Martini, Factory New’s co-founder, described the project as part of a deliberate approach to artist creation. As quoted by Futurism, he said, “Now we can literally custom-create artists using elements proven to work.” He also argued that a 2% success rate would double what he called the industry standard. Those were Martini’s views and figures, not independently verified measures of industry performance.

Why did FN Meka draw criticism?

By August 24, 2022, The FADER was reporting a public dispute about the project and “Florida Water.” Critics objected to earlier FN Meka content that included a racial slur and imagery they regarded as trivializing incarceration and police brutality. These are reported criticisms of specific material, not a neutral description of the project’s intent.

The controversy concerned more than whether software helped make a song. It also raised questions about the persona and cultural references chosen for a virtual artist, who was responsible for them, and how audiences and collaborators responded. The contemporary reporting documents the criticism and the label’s subsequent separation from the project; it does not establish the creators’ full decision-making process.

What the episode does—and does not—show about AI music

FN Meka is a useful case for examining how human and AI contributions can coexist in a music project, but it is not evidence that a machine independently wrote and performed a finished song. The creators’ description of AI-assisted music and the reported human vocals point to a hybrid process, while the precise technical contribution remains unverified in the cited coverage.

When assessing claims about virtual or AI artists, consider four separate questions:

  • Creative contribution: Which parts of the lyrics, composition, production, and performance came from people, and which were generated or shaped by software?
  • Transparency: Does the project explain its methods clearly enough for listeners to understand what “AI” means in its case?
  • Persona and references: Who created the artist’s identity, and how are its cultural references presented?
  • Response: How do listeners, collaborators, and industry partners react to the work and its presentation?

This episode does not establish the current status of FN Meka or support a ranking of today’s AI music systems.
