Google’s Holi Search Easter egg let people splash colored powder across their results page. Technology outlets reported the feature on March 9, 2020; its availability in 2026 is not officially confirmed, so the instructions below describe how it worked then—not a feature Google guarantees today.
What did Google’s Holi Easter egg do?
Searching Google for Holi could bring up an information card with bowls of colored powder. Clicking or tapping the bowls activated an animation: further clicks or taps splashed color across the Search results page. A water-drop control cleared the effect. Contemporary accounts described the results as difficult to use while the color covered the page. 9to5Google’s March 2020 report and Gadgets 360’s coverage documented the interaction.
Holi is associated with spring and the throwing or smearing of colored powders and water; Google Arts & Culture offers background on the festival’s colors. The Search effect turned that familiar imagery into a temporary page interaction.
How did you activate it?

- Open Google Search in a browser or the Google Search app.
- Search for Holi. If the expected information card does not appear, try Holi festival.
- Look for the Holi card or knowledge panel and its image of bowls of colored powder.
- Click or tap the bowls image to start the effect.
- Click or tap around the results page to add splashes of color.
- Use the water-drop icon to wash the color away. Reports placed the control at the top on desktop and near the bottom on mobile, though the layout may vary.
Contemporary reports described the effect on desktop and mobile web, as well as the Android and iOS Search apps. That is historical launch coverage, not a guarantee of present-day compatibility. Does the Holi Easter egg still work?
It worked when it was reported on March 9, 2020, but Google has not been found to guarantee that the effect remains available in 2026. The original coverage is historical; the feature may have been seasonal or retired. Google has announced other time-limited Search Easter eggs, including one that was scheduled to run only until after July 4, 2026, but that does not establish the Holi effect’s status. Google’s announcement illustrates why a Search Easter egg should not be assumed to be permanent.

If you try the steps and do not see the bowls, that does not necessarily mean you missed a hidden shortcut. The card or effect may no longer be offered, or the results may differ by location, language, account, query, or interface. Those are practical possibilities, not explanations Google has confirmed for this feature.
If you want to check
- Search directly on Google, not through another search provider embedded in an app.
- Try both Holi and Holi festival, then look for the powder-bowls image.
- If it is absent, compare desktop and mobile web or the Google Search app; their layouts may differ.
- As a troubleshooting check, refresh the results and temporarily disable extensions that block scripts or page effects. These steps may help identify an interface issue, but cannot restore a feature Google no longer serves.
Is it a Google Doodle?
The 2020 color-splash effect was described as a Search Easter egg: an interaction attached to search results, not necessarily a homepage Doodle. Google has also marked Holi in separate Doodles. For example, TIME covered a 2017 Holi Doodle featuring animated figures throwing color at the Google logo. That Doodle and the 2020 Search effect are different experiences.

How it differs from “Color your Search”
A separate feature reported in January 2026, called “Color your Search,” concerned selectable accent colors for Search. It is not the Holi Easter egg: one changes Search’s appearance, while the 2020 effect simulated powder splashes across results. Android Authority reported on the separate test.
