Its joke turns the dispute over ChatGPT’s Sky voice into an intentionally absurd image: a visibly artificial Johansson with “7-Fingered” hands delivering “Full-Fledged Approval.”
What The Onion’s headline is making fun of
Futurism’s May 24, 2024 article reproduced The Onion headline: “Jerky, 7-Fingered Scarlett Johansson Appears In Video To Express Full-Fledged Approval Of OpenAI.” The grotesque, AI-image shorthand and fabricated endorsement mock the controversy itself. The headline does not document Johansson appearing in a video, nor does it report that she approved OpenAI.
The satire lands because it flips the dispute’s central tension: a voice associated by some listeners with Johansson, followed by a made-up image of Johansson enthusiastically endorsing the company. The absurdity is the point, not evidence about what happened.
Why Sky became controversial
Futurism reported that OpenAI introduced GPT-4o with several AI voice options, including Sky, and that observers said Sky sounded similar to Johansson. Johansson said OpenAI had approached her about licensing her voice and that she declined. In her statement, quoted by Futurism, she said: “I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets could not tell the difference.”

OpenAI’s reported response was that Sky had been voiced by another actress and that it had not copied Johansson’s voice. These are the parties’ respective accounts as reported by Futurism; that account alone does not independently establish the voice’s identity, whether it was imitated, or what consent was given.
What the “her” post does—and does not—show
Futurism also noted that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted the word “her” on the GPT-4o launch date. The article interprets it as a likely reference to Johansson’s role in the film Her, whose AI character is voiced by Johansson. That is an interpretation of the post, not a verified explanation of Altman’s intent.

What the article leaves unresolved
The satire comments on the public controversy; it cannot resolve the underlying disagreement. Futurism’s account presents Johansson’s allegation alongside OpenAI’s denial, but it does not establish legal liability or report a court outcome. Readers should distinguish the Onion joke, the attributed statements, and facts independently proven about the dispute.
