Those were the operators’ explanations, not an independent determination that Wiziwig’s streams were authorized or that legal broadcasts were unavailable everywhere.
Why did Wiziwig shut down?
Wiziwig’s closure was reported on January 3, 2015. In the statement reported at the time, the operators cited a change in Spanish law and attention from rights holders. They also argued that leagues and competitions often failed to provide suitable legal ways to watch games. These points describe the operators’ account of their decision; they do not establish the legal status of every stream linked through the site. How big was Wiziwig at the time?
TorrentFreak described Wiziwig as one of the world’s largest sports streaming portals. During the shutdown news cycle, “wiziwig” briefly ranked eighth in Google.co.uk searches, according to the report. Both details refer to the period around the 2015 closure; they are not evidence of the site’s present-day reach or popularity. TorrentFreak reported the period-specific description and search ranking.
Where can you watch live sports now?
There is no single universal replacement for Wiziwig. Live broadcast rights are licensed by competition and vary by country and season. WIPO’s discussion of enforcement explains that streaming providers need licenses from leagues or associations to show their content. For a particular game, check the official broadcaster information published by the competition or league for your country and the relevant season; do not assume a service carries every event. Recent announcements illustrate how specific rights can be. FIFA and DAZN announced in June 2026 that FIFA+ on DAZN would include around 8,500 live matches each year from around 100 FIFA member associations. Amazon’s NBA and WNBA agreement, announced for the 2025–26 season, covers specified games and markets. A separate agreement announced by Rogers and Prime Video in July 2026 concerns specified NHL games in Canada beginning in the 2026–27 season. These announcements do not establish worldwide availability or make any one service a replacement for Wiziwig across all sports. Check the official listing for the event, location, and season you care about. FIFA and DAZN’s FIFA+ announcement, Amazon’s NBA/WNBA announcement, and Rogers and Prime Video’s Canada NHL announcement describe those arrangements.
Later enforcement against unauthorized sports streams
Wiziwig’s 2015 closure is separate from later enforcement actions. On June 26, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it had seized nearly 400 domains used for unauthorized World Cup match streams. Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva said: “We have seized hundreds of domains, used to illegally stream World Cup matches for profit, to disrupt the international networks that profit from the global popularity of the World Cup.” This was a U.S. enforcement action in 2026; it is not evidence about why Wiziwig closed or about the application of Spanish law in 2015.
