Tom Selleck says he kept the Rolex he wore as Magnum and still has it because he loves its toughness, its dual-time display and the way its red-and-blue bezel suited the character’s world. There is a small identification wrinkle: Selleck called his watch a Rolex 1675 in a 2018 interview, while Hodinkee’s 2021 examination identifies the principal on-screen Magnum watch as a later reference, the GMT-Master 16750.
Why Selleck kept wearing the Rolex
In a 2018 interview with the Fondation Haute Horlogerie, Selleck said, “That I did keep. I’ve always loved that watch. It was the perfect match for Magnum.” He praised it as a watch that could take rough use, recalling that it had been underwater, buried in sand and knocked around without giving him problems. He also liked its dual-time display, which lets the wearer track a second time zone.
The watch’s colors mattered, too. Selleck said the red-and-blue “Pepsi” bezel had become a legend and would never go out of style. He connected its red to Magnum’s Ferrari and its blue to Hawaii’s lagoons and sky. The explanation brings together practical appeal and character design: a capable tool watch with a distinctive look that belonged in the show’s sunlit setting.
Was Magnum’s watch a Rolex 1675 or 16750?
The difference in reference numbers reflects two distinct claims, not a settled consensus under one name. In the FHH interview, Selleck calls the watch he kept “the Rolex 1675.” Hodinkee’s 2021 specialist analysis identifies the main on-screen watch as a GMT-Master 16750, pointing to its dial-and-hand arrangement and crown-guard shape. It is therefore most accurate to attribute the 1675 wording to Selleck and the 16750 identification to Hodinkee rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Hodinkee gives the classic GMT-Master 1675’s production period as 1959–1980 and the successor 16750’s as 1980–1988. Those dates help explain why the references can be confused, but they do not erase the distinction between Selleck’s recollection and Hodinkee’s watch identification.
The Rolex was not Magnum’s watch from the pilot
According to Hodinkee, Magnum wore a Chronosport Sea Quartz 30 through much of the early seasons and occasionally a Seiko SQ Quartz diver. The Rolex GMT-Master appeared in season four, rather than being present from the first episode. In the story, it was Magnum’s father’s watch: a flashback shows his father wearing it while timing young Thomas’s swim, establishing the Rolex as a family heirloom.

Hodinkee describes the 16750 as a steel-bracelet, dual-time tool watch with 100 m water resistance. Its second-time-zone function and rugged character fit the role, while the colorful bezel gave it a memorable visual identity. The earlier watches and the Rolex therefore mark different moments in the series rather than one continuous watch choice from the start.
What Selleck says remains from Magnum’s days
The FHH interview introduced Selleck as having played the investigator for 162 episodes. Asked about what remained from the role, Selleck joked that all that was left of his Magnum days were his Rolex, a couple of Hawaiian shirts and his moustache comb. He also said the character remained a major hit in more than 90 countries. His comment makes the watch more than a screen prop: it was one of the few physical reminders of the part he chose to keep.

What to know before looking for one
Collectors searching for the watch commonly described as a Magnum Rolex can use “Rolex GMT-Master 16750 Pepsi” as a starting phrase. Reference numbers, condition and originality matter with vintage watches, so confirm the reference and have the watch’s components and service history assessed by a qualified specialist before buying. The on-screen identification and Selleck’s own 1675 recollection should not be treated as proof that every watch advertised as a “Magnum Rolex” is the same configuration.
