What happens in the video?
Eminem sits beside an empty chair, where a de-aged Slim Shady appears in a rough, hologram-like form. The setup plays like an intervention or interview between the artist as he is now and his early-2000s persona. The younger figure is AI-generated imagery, not archival footage or a physical hologram.

Futurism’s account quotes lines delivered by the AI-styled Shady, including “You’re not fuckin’ Taylor Swift” and “You had one era that mattered: mine.” The exchange turns the contrast between the two versions into the scene’s central joke and source of tension.
Why was Eminem talking to Slim Shady?
The video was tied to a cover-story package for The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), according to Futurism’s report on Complex’s post. Complex described the premise as: “Somewhere in the Detroit multiverse, Slim Shady has escaped his 2002 timeline and popped through a portal to terrorize 2024.” That is promotional framing for the concept, not a claim that the scene depicts real time travel.

Who was credited for the AI effects?
Futurism reported that the YouTube video summary credited Metaphysic AI with the effects. The report does not include a direct statement from the company or production team, so that credit should be understood as secondary reporting of the video summary rather than independent confirmation from Metaphysic AI.
Why does the de-aging look so bad?
Futurism’s criticism focuses on the visible result: a scratchy, uncanny image presented as a younger Slim Shady beside contemporary Eminem. The source does not provide a formal image-quality test, a technical breakdown, or comments from someone involved in producing the effect. It therefore supports describing this video’s look as poorly received by that outlet, not diagnosing which technical choices caused it.

Nor does one staged music-promo video establish how well AI de-aging works generally. The available reporting does not compare tools or production methods, or assess matters such as facial movement, lighting, compositing, and consistency across shots. “Astonishingly bad” is a critical judgment about this example, not a measured benchmark.
