Why People Say Elon Musk Missed the Point of Star Trek

Musk’s enthusiasm for Star Trek’s giant spaceships is clear. His Starfleet Academy joke raised a different question: does he share the franchise’s broader investment in inclusion and social imagination?

Elon Musk’s public vision of Star Trek overlaps with the franchise on giant spacecraft, exploration and optimism. The tension is that Star Trek also presents inclusion, diversity and social imagination as part of that future—and Musk’s joke about a diverse Starfleet Academy cast treated visible differences as the punchline. That is a pointed contrast, not proof that one post captures everything he thinks about the series.

What is the point of Star Trek?

Star Trek is not only a story about getting advanced technology into space. Paramount’s official franchise description links its legacy to scientific exploration and uncharted frontiers, but also to cultural diversity and inclusion, expressed through the phrase “Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations.” Those are the rights-holder’s stated themes, rather than a neutral academic verdict on every series or episode. Paramount’s 2025 anniversary announcement places 2026 as the franchise’s 60th anniversary year, marking 60 years since the original series debuted in 1966.

The ideal is a future in which exploration and discovery matter, and in which people with different backgrounds can belong to the same project. That does not mean every production choice automatically succeeds; it does mean that diversity is not an unrelated add-on to Star Trek’s declared vision.

Where Musk’s vision overlaps with Star Trek

Musk has repeatedly spoken approvingly of a Star Trek-like future, especially its spacefaring technology. In a 2026 World Economic Forum conversation, he said: “And we want to have Starfleet and Star Trek, really, for real, where we actually have giant spaceships traveling through space, going to other planets.” The World Economic Forum transcript captures his interest in making space travel real.

In a 2026 interview with The Economist, he said, “I sort of want the Star Trek Star wars future,” while discussing a spacefaring civilization and non-dystopian science fiction. The remark indicates an attraction to an expansive, hopeful future; it does not establish that he endorses every social idea associated with Star Trek. The Economist interview provides that context.

Why his Starfleet Academy joke drew criticism

In January 2026, Musk shared a Starfleet Academy clip and joked: “Turns out they banned Ozempic and LASIK in the future. lol.” Fast Company reported the comment alongside the image that prompted it. Fast Company’s account is evidence of a specific joke about the characters’ appearance, not a comprehensive statement of his beliefs.

The show’s official first-look announcement describes cadets of varied backgrounds and species coming together around “a common dream of hope and optimism.” It identifies a Klingon and other nonhuman characters among the students. StarTrek.com’s announcement makes clear that difference is built into the premise. Against Paramount’s stated emphasis on inclusion, a joke that targets the cast’s visible differences can look like it is missing a central part of the franchise—not merely criticizing a particular creative decision.

How the two visions differ

Dimension Musk’s public remarks Star Trek’s stated framing
Technology and exploration Giant spaceships, travel to other planets, and making a science-fiction future real, as described at the 2026 World Economic Forum. Scientific exploration and uncharted frontiers, in Paramount’s official franchise description.
Social imagination The cited spacefaring remarks do not set out a broader social vision. Cultural diversity, inclusion and “Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations,” in Paramount’s franchise description; Starfleet Academy’s cadets also span backgrounds and species.

The strongest fair reading is therefore a contrast in emphasis: Musk’s cited enthusiasm centers on the technological promise, while Star Trek’s own framing joins exploration to the social world being explored. His Academy joke sharpens that tension, but cannot establish his entire worldview or prove that he rejects the franchise.

Star Trek has always had to imagine what comes next

Star Trek’s future-facing tradition includes changing the stories it tells. At a 1986 press conference announcing The Next Generation, creator Gene Roddenberry said, “We must continue to talk about exciting and different things.” StarTrek.com’s retrospective records that remark and places it in the context of launching a new series rather than simply repeating the original. The retrospective offers a useful reminder that renewal and experimentation are part of the franchise’s history, even as viewers can disagree about whether a particular attempt works.

In its 2025 announcement, Paramount described Star Trek as comprising 11 television series, 14 films and more than 900 episodes. Those figures indicate the scale of the franchise; they do not settle how any new series should be judged. The Guardian’s September 2026 anniversary feature reports on backlash around Starfleet Academy and quotes actor Robert Picardo saying he believed the show did not receive a fair shake. That is Picardo’s assessment, not evidence that Musk’s post caused a cancellation. The Guardian’s anniversary feature records the reaction in that context.
