Spotify’s newest major listener-facing announcement is Talk to Spotify, a mobile beta announced July 14, 2026 for eligible Premium users. But the update most directly aimed at everyday control arrived May 28: mobile playlist folders and bulk editing, Premium queue controls and reshuffle, and background downloads for Premium users on iOS. These features rolled out separately, and access depends on the feature, plan, device, market, and rollout.
Which Spotify update is the headline about?
Spotify has introduced several control features during 2026, not one universal redesign. The newest major announcement is Talk to Spotify; the broadest practical bundle for organizing and managing playback is the May 28 release.

- July 14, 2026: Talk to Spotify, a conversational listening and discovery beta for eligible Premium users on mobile. Spotify’s announcement.
- July 10, 2026: Release Radar controls for steering certain discovery sessions. Spotify’s announcement.
- May 28, 2026: mobile playlist folders and bulk playlist editing for all users, plus Premium queue management, iOS background downloads and mobile reshuffle. Spotify’s announcement.
- April 9, 2026: controls for video, music videos, podcast video and Canvas visuals. Spotify’s announcement.
“More control” means more ways to organize, steer or present listening. It does not mean every listener can choose every recommended track or that all features are available on every account.
What Talk to Spotify does—and how to try it
Talk to Spotify is a conversational interface accessed from Home or the Now Playing view on mobile when it is available to an eligible Premium account. You can type or speak requests about what to play, explore listening history, or learn more about music, podcasts and audiobooks. Spotify’s support page describes examples such as finding music you heard in one year but not another. Voice responses are available where supported.

- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- New finds, old favorites, one card. Choose a unique gift card design featuring your favorite games or apps. This card can also be used for anything else on Google Play. There’s something for everyone, so find what’s yours. Go Play.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Easy to use: With a Google Play gift code, you never have to worry about expiration dates or fees.
It is a beta listening and discovery feature, not a general-purpose assistant or a replacement for Spotify’s ordinary playback controls. A vague request can produce an unexpected result; check the response and what Spotify queues before relying on it.
- Update Spotify through your device’s app store.
- Open Spotify on a supported mobile device and check Home or Now Playing for Talk to Spotify.
- Tap the entry point, then type or speak a specific request.
- Review the response and resulting playback. If an available voice response is silent, check the feature’s volume setting and your device’s media volume.
The feature is beta, and Spotify does not promise that every Premium subscriber will see it immediately. Button names and placement may change.
Everyday controls in the May 28 update
Organize playlists with mobile folders
Spotify announced playlist folders on mobile for all users globally. Folders let you group playlists by mood, activity, genre or another system, making a large library easier to navigate; they do not change recommendations or sound quality. Open Your Library and look for the playlist-management option to create or move playlists into folders. Exact menu labels can vary.

Edit several playlist items at once
Bulk editing lets users select and manage multiple tracks, books or podcast episodes in a playlist. It is useful for cleaning up or reorganizing large playlists. Spotify’s announcement does not enumerate every available operation for each content type, so do not assume identical actions across music, podcasts and audiobooks.
Manage the queue during a listening session
Premium users can select and manage multiple songs in the play queue. A queue is temporary: changing it affects what plays in the current session. Editing a saved playlist changes that persistent collection instead.
Download in the background on iOS
Spotify announced background downloads globally for Premium users on iOS. Music and podcasts can continue downloading when the app is not open, with notifications showing progress. Start the download, and make sure the device has storage and network access. The announcement specifies iOS; it does not establish the same improvement for Android or guarantee downloads under every iOS power and network setting.

Reshuffle without restarting shuffle
Premium users on mobile can tap a reshuffle button while using shuffle to generate a different playback sequence. This changes the current order; it does not necessarily permanently rearrange the saved playlist.
Steer discovery without choosing every track
Release Radar controls
Spotify’s July 10 announcement describes controls at the top of Release Radar, rolling out on mobile and desktop. Listeners can choose from up to five options, with examples including discovering new artists and editors’ picks, as well as genre and other personalized options. These choices shape a discovery session; Spotify’s algorithm and editorial curation still determine the pool of recommendations. That is guidance, not manual selection of exact tracks.

Several controls predate the 2026 announcements. Spotify described Smart Filters for supported markets, Hide, Snooze, Taste Profile controls, queue settings and playlist-mixing tools in 2025. Hide removes a track from a playlist’s playback; Snooze temporarily removes a song from recommendations for 30 days for eligible Premium users. These controls can influence personalization but do not guarantee that an artist or genre will never reappear. See Spotify’s overview of listening controls.

Spotify also offers Premium shuffle settings: open Settings > Playback, then choose Fewer Repeats or Standard Shuffle. Fewer Repeats takes recent listening into account; Standard aims for a more random experience and may repeat tracks more often. Spotify announced these options in 2025. Read the shuffle announcement.
Choose an audio-first or video-enhanced experience
Spotify’s April 9, 2026 update introduced controls for whether music videos, podcast video and Canvas looping visuals appear. The aim is to let listeners tailor how visual content shows up, including an audio-first experience; Spotify has not removed video from the service. The company says preferences apply across mobile, desktop, web, TV and other supported environments, though precise options and behavior can vary by device and account. See Spotify’s video-control announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controls for children and managed accounts
Managed accounts give parents or guardians options including disabling videos and visual content by default and limiting interactive features such as Messages and Jam. Spotify expanded managed accounts to its free tier in additional markets. As of Spotify’s July 15, 2026 update, free-tier availability included the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany and the Netherlands; Canada and additional European countries were still forthcoming at that time. Availability and age thresholds depend on market, so check Spotify’s managed-account update for the stated scope. For the U.S., Spotify said free-tier managed accounts were available as of July 15, 2026.

Which features fit your needs?
| Need | Relevant feature | Confirmed scope or main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Organize a large library | Mobile playlist folders | Announced globally for all users; organization does not improve recommendations. |
| Clean up playlists | Bulk editing | Announced globally for all users; exact actions may differ by content type. |
| Choose what plays next | Multi-select queue management | Premium; affects the current listening session. |
| Reduce repeats | Fewer Repeats Shuffle | Premium; less random than Standard Shuffle. |
| Get a new playback sequence | Reshuffle | Premium on mobile; changes the current sequence, not necessarily the saved playlist. |
| Listen offline with downloads continuing outside the app | Background downloads | Premium on iOS, announced globally; storage, network and device behavior matter. |
| Guide discovery | Release Radar controls | Rolling out on mobile and desktop; Spotify still selects recommendations. |
| Avoid unwanted visuals | Video controls | Options and behavior may vary by supported device and account. |
| Make conversational music requests | Talk to Spotify | Beta for eligible Premium users on mobile; rollout is not universal. |
| Manage a child’s listening | Managed accounts | Market, age and account availability restrictions apply. |
The May 2026 release is not Premium-only: folders and bulk editing were announced for all users, while queue multi-selection, mobile reshuffle and background downloads were tied to Premium. Free users may also have access to video controls, managed-account features where available, and discovery controls depending on rollout and market.
What Spotify still does not let you control completely
- Exact recommendations: Release Radar controls steer a recommendation set, but do not replace Spotify’s algorithm or editorial selection with a track-by-track command.
- Permanent exclusion: Hide, Snooze and taste controls influence personalization; they are not a guarantee that unwanted music will never surface elsewhere.
- Every beta or device experience: Talk to Spotify is not universally available, and video settings can behave differently across platforms.
- Permanent queue customization: Queue edits govern a session; use a saved playlist when you want a lasting collection.
Spotify is moving toward more user-steerable personalization, not a fully manual player. The distinction matters: you can shape how you listen and influence what is surfaced, but Spotify continues to provide much of the underlying selection.
Quick Recap
If a control is missing or does not work
- Update the Spotify app, then check the specific location associated with the feature: Home or Now Playing for Talk to Spotify, and Your Library for playlist organization.
- Confirm the plan and platform. The May announcement ties queue multi-selection and reshuffle to Premium, and describes background downloads specifically for Premium on iOS.
- Allow for rollout and market limits. A feature announced as global can still arrive at different times for accounts; Talk to Spotify is an eligible-user beta, while managed-account availability varies by country and age.
- For downloads, verify that downloading was initiated, storage is available and the device has network access. Notifications can show progress, but the announcement does not promise background behavior under every device setting.
- For unexpected conversational results, make the request more specific and inspect the resulting playback rather than assuming the beta understood correctly.
- If video options differ between devices, check the setting on the platform you are using; supported-device behavior and available options can vary.
