Hulu Plus launched for Nintendo 3DS-family systems, including 3DS and 2DS hardware, on October 17, 2013. It was a genuine U.S.-market release, but it is now historical: Nintendo says the app left the 3DS eShop on August 22, 2018, and Hulu service on the platform ended on February 20, 2019. There is no official way to install and use Hulu on a 3DS or 2DS today.
What launched for 3DS and 2DS in 2013?
On October 17, 2013, Hulu Plus became available through the Nintendo 3DS eShop, according to HotHardware’s launch report. The U.S.-market announcement covered Nintendo 3DS-family systems, including 3DS and 2DS hardware; it should not be read as proof of availability in every country where those consoles were sold. Hulu Plus is the service’s historical branding in that report, not a statement about current plans or naming.

The app adapted Hulu browsing and playback to the handheld’s two screens. The lower touchscreen showed the catalog and playback controls, while video played on the main display. The report also described the ability to resume a program on another compatible Hulu device. This was a dual-screen interface, not evidence that Hulu shows streamed in stereoscopic 3D.
How installation worked at the time
When the app was offered, owners could download it from the Nintendo eShop. The launch report also advertised a one-week free trial through Hulu’s 3DS landing page; that was a launch-era offer, not a current promotion.

Why Hulu no longer works on 3DS or 2DS
Nintendo’s Hulu discontinuation notice gives two separate dates: the app was removed from the 3DS eShop on August 22, 2018, and Hulu service on 3DS-family systems was discontinued on February 20, 2019. The end of service is the decisive reason an old app copy cannot provide Hulu playback. An icon or retained installation does not mean the service remains supported.
Later Nintendo shutdowns further closed the official route for new installations. The 3DS eShop stopped accepting new purchases and free-content downloads on March 27, 2023; Nintendo says redownloads of previously acquired content remained available for the foreseeable future. Nintendo also ended online play and other online communication functions for 3DS software on April 8, 2024, subject to limited exceptions. Those later platform changes came after Hulu’s own service shutdown; they were not the original reason Hulu stopped working.
Can you install Hulu on a 3DS now?
No—not through an official supported method. The app was withdrawn years ago and its service ended in 2019. Unofficial package files, custom firmware, or replacement clients are not equivalent to the supported Hulu app and may introduce security, account, or copyright risks.

Do not assume the old 3DS app carried over to Switch. Nintendo says the Hulu app was removed from Switch on November 6, 2025, and service ended there on February 5, 2026. See Nintendo’s Switch discontinuation notice for its current platform-specific details.

A 3DS or 2DS may still make sense for its game library, but not as a Hulu device. The original headline was accurate in October 2013; it is not a current availability notice.
