Franklin Richards is the infant son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Galactus threatens Earth and the baby, making the cosmic danger personal for the Fantastic Four. Director Matt Shakman describes the film’s central contrast as one between the “tiniest, youngest thing in the world” and the “oldest, biggest thing in the universe”—a description of the story’s scale, not a confirmed list of Franklin’s powers.
Who is Franklin Richards?
Franklin is Reed and Sue’s baby, not one of the Fantastic Four. Disney’s official feature identifies him as their son and presents Galactus’s threat to take him as a central family stake alongside the danger to Earth. The Walt Disney Company’s film feature describes the setup.
Why does Galactus threaten him?
In the film’s conflict, Galactus threatens both Earth and Franklin. The available official description establishes the threat and its importance to the family; it does not explain a specific motive beyond that setup or confirm that Franklin has a particular power Galactus wants.
What did director Matt Shakman mean by “powerful baby”?
In a GamesRadar+ interview published July 18, 2025, Shakman called the movie charming because it is about “the tiniest, youngest thing in the world and the oldest, biggest thing in the universe.” His remark frames the contrast between a newborn and Galactus as a matter of age and scale. It should not be read as a technical explanation of Franklin’s abilities.

Are Franklin’s comic-book powers confirmed in the film?
Not by the cited film sources. Disney’s feature and Shakman’s interview establish Franklin’s family role and narrative importance, but do not provide a detailed inventory of his powers on screen. Comic stories can offer context for the character, but they are not proof that a given ability or event appears in this film.
That distinction matters because The Fantastic Four: First Steps has its own continuity. Disney describes it as a story set in alternate-universe Earth-828, in a 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic world, four years after the team’s exposure to cosmic rays—not as an origin story. Disney also says the film’s world draws on the original comics by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee; that inspiration does not make every comic-book detail film canon.

Where does Franklin fit in the story?
Franklin makes the threat to the planet immediate for Reed and Sue: the danger is not only cosmic, but directed at their child. Shakman’s contrast connects the intimate vulnerability of a baby with the vast scale of Galactus, giving the family conflict and the danger to Earth a shared focus.
Marvel’s official film page identifies Matt Shakman as director. The Directors Guild of America also covered Shakman discussing the film.
