Mandy Moore shared a GoFundMe for her brother- and sister-in-law after their home was lost in the Eaton Fire, then responded to critics who questioned why she was asking the public to donate. In the response reported by news outlets, Moore said her family was helping and that a friend had started the fundraiser after people asked how they could help.
Who was the GoFundMe for?
The fundraiser was for Moore’s brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Griff and Kit Goldsmith, after they lost their home in the Eaton Fire. January 2025 news reports said Moore shared the appeal and invited people to donate or pass it along. The Guardian and other outlets reported details from Moore’s social-media post; the original post and fundraiser are not independently verified here.
Moore’s post described the couple as expecting their first child within weeks. It also said Griff, a touring musician, had lost his drums and percussion equipment used for work. The Standard reported that the campaign initially set a $60,000 target; that figure was a goal, not a confirmed amount raised. The campaign’s final total and present status are not established in the cited coverage.

Moore said a friend, Matt, had started the GoFundMe after people asked how they could help the Goldsmiths. News reports reproduced her explanation: “Our buddy Matt started this go fund me and i’m sharing because people have asked how they can help them.”

That account distinguishes organizing the campaign from sharing it: Moore said the friend launched it, while she used her platform to direct interested people to it. The reported appeal presented donating or sharing as options, not obligations.
What did Moore say to critics?
Some critics questioned why a wealthy celebrity was asking the public to contribute to relatives’ recovery rather than supporting them privately. Online net-worth estimates were invoked in that argument, but they are speculative and do not establish Moore’s actual finances or whether she contributed.

In the response reproduced by news outlets, Moore said her family was helping the Goldsmiths and objected to the criticism. She wrote: “We just lost most of our life in a fire too. Kindly F OFF. no one is forcing you to do anything.” The statement referred to Moore’s own family having lost much in a fire; it did not say that her family was refusing to help her in-laws.

The reported facts clarify who the appeal concerned and how Moore explained sharing it. Whether a celebrity should publicly solicit donations for relatives is a separate judgment, and people may reasonably disagree about it. The Guardian placed the reaction in the wider debate over disaster fundraising online and unequal access to aid; that broader discussion does not establish what individual donors gave or how much the campaign ultimately raised.
