There is no confirmed publication date for The Winds of Winter. The clearest explanation for why the book is difficult to finish is also a qualified one: Martin has described how viewpoint, chronology and cause-and-effect tangled together while he wrote the preceding novel, and he moved some chapters between volumes. That history suggests the remaining story is structurally demanding, but it does not prove that structural complexity is the sole cause of the current delay.
What is the real issue behind the delay?
The strongest evidence points to a demanding, interconnected story—not to a single confirmed explanation from Martin. In a 2011 account of completing A Dance with Dragons, he described wrestling with the “Meereenese knot,” a problem that involved which character should tell parts of the story, when events should happen, and how their causes and consequences fit together.
That is relevant context for a series with many viewpoint characters and plotlines moving across the same world. It is not a statement that the same knot is holding up The Winds of Winter. The distinction matters: Martin’s firsthand comments describe the process of writing the previous book; applying them to the present delay is an interpretation.
What Martin said about the writing problem
In his May 19, 2011 post, Martin wrote: “At least part of the infamous Meereenese knot was a viewpoint problem. (Not all of it, no, a lot had to do with chronology and causation, but some of it was a POV question). Introducing a new POV helped me resolve those problems, and made for a better book.” He also described uneven progress: “I had good bursts where I got a lot done. I had rough patches, where I struggled, and even a few periods where I was doing more rewriting than writing.”

How the books’ boundaries complicate the picture
Martin said chapters originally intended for A Dance with Dragons were moved into The Winds of Winter. That shows that the installments are not entirely separate narrative units: decisions about where one volume ends can affect the next. It does not, by itself, establish how much those moved chapters account for the present delay.
What is known about progress—and when it was reported
The latest quantified progress report in the sources reviewed here dates to January 2026. GamesRadar+, citing an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, reported that Martin had completed about 1,100 manuscript pages. The figure is approximate and belongs to that interview date; it should not be treated as his page count today.

In the same reported interview, Martin said of giving up: “I would hate that. It would feel like a total failure to me. I want to finish.” That conveys his stated intention, not a timetable or guarantee of publication.
| Date | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| May 19, 2011 | Martin said A Dance with Dragons was complete and moving toward publication. He gave a final-draft count of 1,510 manuscript pages using his WordStar page count, which he distinguished from the converted Word page count. | A dated account of the previous book’s length, writing challenges and chapter moves; not a progress figure for The Winds of Winter. |
| April 14, 2023 | Martin’s official blog discussed three published Dunk and Egg novellas, additional stories he wanted to write, and The Winds of Winter as a book he still needed to finish. | Evidence of a broader planned writing slate, not evidence of how much time other projects took from this novel. |
| January 2026 | GamesRadar+ reported about 1,100 manuscript pages, citing Martin’s interview with The Hollywood Reporter. | An approximate progress snapshot from that date, not a current count or release estimate. |
| August 2026 | Martin’s official blog update discussed personal and franchise news but gave no new Winds page count or release date. | No new date or quantified progress was announced in that update. |
Which explanations are confirmed, and which are interpretation?
| Claim | Who it comes from | Evidence and limit |
|---|---|---|
| Writing the story can involve difficult viewpoint, chronology and causation decisions. | George R. R. Martin | His 2011 retrospective describes these problems in the making of A Dance with Dragons. It does not identify them as the definitive cause of the current delay. |
| The next book is difficult because many unresolved storylines must be brought together. | Commentators, including FandomWire | This is a plausible reading of the series’ complexity, but it is commentary rather than a confirmed diagnosis from Martin. |
| Other planned writing may be part of the wider context. | Martin’s 2023 blog | He named other intended work, including Dunk and Egg stories. The statement does not quantify any effect on the time spent writing The Winds of Winter. |
These points should not be collapsed into a definitive explanation. The firsthand account offers useful context about Martin’s process; later progress reporting supplies dated snapshots; broader claims about what is currently slowing the book remain interpretation unless Martin confirms them.

Is there an expected release date?
No confirmed release date is established in the sources reviewed here. Martin’s 2023 comments and the reported January 2026 interview indicate that he still intended to finish the book, but neither gives a publication date. His August 2026 blog update added no date or new progress count. A forecast would therefore be speculation, not an announced schedule.
