The Eric Dane apocalyptic series is The Last Ship, TNT’s five-season drama about a U.S. Navy destroyer crew trying to protect scientists and find a cure after a fictional pandemic devastates the world. It ran from 2014 to 2018. Calling it a “sleeper hit” is a matter of editorial characterization; the available sources establish the show’s premise and run, not a ratings or critical-consensus case for that label.
What is The Last Ship about?
Eric Dane stars as Captain Tom Chandler, commander of the USS Nathan James. After a fictional pandemic kills 80% of the world’s population in the series’ premise, Chandler and the ship’s crew work with virologist Dr. Rachel Scott, played by Rhona Mitra, to develop and protect a cure. That 80% figure describes the show’s fictional catastrophe, not a real-world epidemiological statistic. Netflix Tudum’s synopsis frames the mission as a fight to find a cure and safeguard it amid threats in a changed world. Netflix Tudum and Apple TV provide series descriptions.
Apple TV sums up the objective this way: “Their mission is simple: Find a cure. Stop the virus. Save the world.” The show combines a pandemic-survival premise with naval and military action, keeping the destroyer and its crew at the center of the story.
Who stars in the series?
Alongside Dane and Mitra, the principal cast includes Adam Baldwin as Mike Slattery, Charles Parnell as Russ Jeter, Travis Van Winkle as Danny Green, Marissa Neitling as Kara Foster, Christina Elmore as Alisha Granderson, and Jocko Sims as Carlton Burk. Netflix Tudum and Apple TV list the cast.

How many seasons and episodes does The Last Ship have?
The TNT series ran for five seasons, from 2014 through 2018. TV Insider lists 63 episodes across the run; Netflix Tudum confirms the five-season run but does not give an episode total. TV Insider provides its season and episode listing.
Is The Last Ship based on a book?
Yes. The series is loosely based on William Brinkley’s 1988 post-apocalyptic novel of the same name, but it changes the central disaster. The television adaptation begins with a pandemic; Brinkley’s novel begins with nuclear war. The shared title and broad post-apocalyptic setup therefore do not mean the show directly reproduces the book’s initiating catastrophe. Netflix Tudum describes the connection and difference.
