Not exactly: the “quadruples its budget” claim compared an estimated $12.5 million in Thursday previews and Friday receipts with a contemporaneous budget estimate of just under $3 million. Box Office Mojo separately listed Iron Lung’s Friday, January 30, 2026 gross at $9 million and ranked it first for the day. Those are different measures, and later reporting put the film’s budget higher.
What did “quadruples its budget” mean?
In its February 1, 2026 report, PC Gamer said Iron Lung had taken an estimated $12.5 million from Thursday previews and Friday combined. It compared that figure with a production-budget estimate of just under $3 million. On that early comparison, the combined receipts were a little more than four times the estimated budget.
That was an opening-day snapshot, not a final accounting. It did not mean the film made four times its budget in profit, nor that Friday alone brought in $12.5 million. Box-office gross is revenue collected at the ticket window, not the amount returned to the production or its backers after theaters, distribution, marketing, and other costs.
Did Iron Lung win Friday’s box office?
Yes. Box Office Mojo lists a $9 million domestic gross for Friday, January 30, 2026, and ranks the film first for that day. The $12.5 million figure in the headline-era coverage included Thursday previews as well as Friday; it should not be substituted for the Friday-only total.

How much did the film make over opening weekend?
Trackers reported slightly different domestic opening totals. Box Office Mojo lists $17.8 million, while The Numbers lists $18,190,786. These are source-specific totals, so it is best to name the tracker rather than treat the figures as interchangeable.
What did Markiplier later say about the budget?
The initial comparison relied on a budget estimate of just under $3 million. In a February 28, 2026 report, PC Gamer quoted Markiplier describing the budget as “a little over” $4 million. That later description is not the same figure as the early estimate, so the four-times comparison depends on which budget figure is used.

In that report, Markiplier said: “No one was really bashing down my door to say, like, ‘We want to make your movie!’” He also said that Hollywood had been “willfully ignoring the potential of YouTubers here.” The comments offer context for how he approached the film; they do not change the box-office accounting.
Where did Iron Lung’s theatrical run end up?
The Numbers lists the film’s worldwide theatrical gross at $51,226,173 and its production budget estimate at $3 million. That database estimate differs from Markiplier’s later “a little over” $4 million description. Neither comparison establishes net earnings: the available figures do not provide a complete accounting of production, marketing, distribution, or revenue shares.

The film adapts David Szymanski’s 2022 sub-simulation horror game, available digitally on Steam. When the early box-office news emerged, Szymanski reacted with “What the fuck” in a post on X, as reported by PC Gamer. That was a reaction to the result, not an independent box-office tally.
