There isn’t reliable evidence here for a list of 16 folk tales that people around the world currently believe as literal truth. The documented sources instead show how oral tales, local legends and folk beliefs are collected and passed on—and why those categories should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why “locals actually believe” needs careful sourcing
A story’s presence in an archive or an oral tradition does not prove that people today believe it happened. Memorial University’s Digital Archives Initiative defines folk beliefs as traditions “not necessarily grounded in scientific fact, but which are or were accepted as truth by community members.” The phrase “are or were” matters: a belief recorded in the past is not necessarily a current one. Memorial University’s folk-belief collection documents the category, but each individual claim still needs evidence about its community, place and time.
- Folktale: a traditional narrative, often told for entertainment or instruction. Its presence in a tradition does not establish literal belief.
- Legend: a story associated with a place, person or historical memory. A legend may be meaningful without being accepted as fact.
- Folk belief: a belief or practice that community members accept, or accepted, as true. Claims about current belief need current, community-specific support.
The Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center, for example, identifies Appalachian Jack Tales, Brer Rabbit stories from the American South and Native American coyote tales as narrative traditions. That identification is useful context, not evidence that people in those communities today take the stories literally. The Library of Congress guide to folklore resources points readers toward collections and context.
What documented traditions can—and cannot—show
Nasreddin anecdotes across Central Asia and Türkiye
UNESCO documents a shared Nasreddin anecdote-telling tradition in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The anecdotes circulate orally and in writing, and versions can differ among communities in imagery, names and details. They are described as humorous and instructive, used in conversation to explain situations or reinforce arguments. That supports calling Nasreddin a living storytelling tradition; it does not establish that the anecdotes are treated as literal historical events. UNESCO’s entry on the Nasreddin/Akhmet tradition describes its shared and varied forms.

Mongolian tales and legends in recorded collections
ICHCAP’s “Sounds from Mongolian Grasslands” archive documents Mongolian oral prose, including tales and legends attributed to performers and locations. The project reports restoring and digitizing over 200 hours of tales and almost 14 hours of legends; those are archive-project quantities, not counts of believers or proof of present-day acceptance. ICHCAP’s Mongolian oral-tradition archive offers a route into recorded performances and their context.
Where to explore more responsibly documented stories
Ireland’s National Folklore Collection
University College Dublin’s National Folklore Collection digitization project provides a searchable folktale index alongside manuscript, photographic and audio material. Its homepage reports 786,462 manuscript pages, 13,899 photographs and 329 hours of audio. These figures describe the collection’s holdings, not the number of tales or people who believe them. UCD’s National Folklore Collection digitization project is a starting point for searching Irish material.

Brazilian chapbooks and oral poetry
The Library of Congress describes Brazilian chapbooks as grassroots printed publications containing songs, poems and stories, and notes that this written form developed from oral poetry. That history helps explain how storytelling can move between performance and print; it does not establish that readers regard a particular story as factual. The Library of Congress collection on Brazilian printed ephemera provides further context.

When a source presents a story as something “locals believe,” look for more than a place name or a record that someone once told it. A careful account should identify who told or accepted the belief, where and when it was recorded, what the belief or practice is, and whether the source describes it as current or historical. If those details are absent, the accurate label is usually “traditional tale,” “legend” or “recorded oral tradition”—not a claim about what local people believe now.
