There is no standardized, evidence-based ranking of 15 police shows by accuracy. This list is an editorial comparison: it weighs how well each series reflects ordinary police work, plausible investigations and procedures in its setting, and the institutional or community context around policing. The order is a judgment, not a consensus among law-enforcement experts.
Accuracy is also uneven within a show. A series may capture local culture while compressing investigations, or benefit from practitioner advice without making every scene realistic. The examples below distinguish documented evidence from broader editorial assessment; the available reporting supports only selected entries, not a definitive score for all 15.
How to read this ranking
Police drama can be assessed on several separate questions: Does it show routine work as well as dramatic calls? Are investigations and procedures plausible for the jurisdiction? Does it account for the institution and the community it serves? Documented consultation is relevant context, but it is not proof that a whole series is accurate.
The FBI makes the same broad distinction in its FAQ: some books and screen portrayals present its responsibilities and procedures reasonably accurately, while others add fictional events or interpretations for dramatic effect. That warning applies to police fiction generally: realism is a matter of degree, and dramatic storytelling routinely reshapes events.

Because the available evidence does not establish comparable scores for every series, the positions below are editorial rather than a measured league table. Where a specific practitioner assessment or production detail is documented, it is attributed; other placements reflect the shows’ approach and are not presented as expert findings.
15 police shows, from least to most accurate
15. Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Its elite task force, rapid cases and action-heavy storytelling make it a weak guide to ordinary police work. The series is entertaining, but its exceptional unit and compressed investigations leave little room for routine workload or the slower limits of procedure.
14. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
The forensic focus gives investigations a recognizable framework, but the show’s brisk movement from evidence collection to solution can make lab work seem more conclusive and immediate than it is. It is stronger as a crime-solving format than as a picture of the day-to-day work of policing.
13. NCIS
The series draws on a real federal investigative agency, yet its tightly coordinated team and high-stakes cases are built for television. It should not be taken as a representative account of routine agency work or as a guide to how every investigation proceeds.

12. Blue Bloods
Family and departmental relationships receive more attention than in many case-of-the-week dramas, which helps provide institutional context. Its polished, rapidly resolved cases nevertheless simplify the administrative and investigative work that surrounds real policing.
11. Law & Order
The show’s procedural structure signals that police work is one part of a larger criminal-justice process. But its condensed investigations and courtroom-ready narrative are designed to reach a resolution in an episode, not to document the full pace or uncertainty of real cases.
10. The Rookie
Following a new officer offers a useful lens on training, hierarchy and the adjustment to patrol work. Its steady run of dramatic incidents still favors memorable calls over the ordinary administrative burden and repetition of the job.
9. Brooklyn Nine-Nine
As a comedy, it is plainly not a procedural manual. Its value is in the workplace ensemble and the relationships inside a precinct; its cases and tone are too heightened to stand in for realistic police procedure.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
8. Line of Duty
The series builds tension from institutional accountability and the possibility of misconduct, rather than treating every police problem as an external threat. Its intricate conspiracies and tightly arranged revelations, however, make it a drama about corruption more than a model of routine investigations.
7. Homicide (Australia)
Australian Screen Online places Homicide in the history of local crime drama and notes its procedural aspirations. That makes it a useful example of a series seeking a grounded approach within its own setting, but it does not establish that each episode or practice is accurate by contemporary standards.
6. The Wire
Its attention to institutions, neighborhoods and the consequences of policing gives the series unusual depth beyond individual cases. That broader social perspective is a strength, though its constructed storylines should not be mistaken for a direct account of any one department’s procedures.
5. Law & Order: SVU
The series keeps investigative work and its human consequences in view, and its subject matter can foreground the difficulties victims face. Its episode-length resolutions and dramatic emphasis still compress complex investigations and outcomes.

4. Happy Valley
Happy Valley is notable for its grounded depiction of British policing and community life in a small-town setting. In a Sky News discussion, serving inspector Liz Cokayne-Delves was reported to regard it as the most accurate show on television. That is a practitioner’s opinion, not the result of a comparative study.
3. Southland
Southland has unusually specific reporting about production efforts to ground its portrayal of the LAPD. The Los Angeles Times reported on a retired LAPD technical adviser, while LAist interviewed writer-producer Cheo Hodari Coker about talking with officers and translating police culture for television. Consultation and research can lend detail, but they do not make every scene or season accurate.
2. Dragnet
Its restrained, procedural style places more emphasis on cases and police work than on spectacle. That approach can feel closer to a report than many action-led dramas, but a controlled television format still selects and shapes events rather than showing the full texture of routine duties.
1. Hill Street Blues
At the top of this editorial ranking, Hill Street Blues earns its place for treating police work as an ongoing institutional and human burden rather than a succession of cleanly solved cases. Its ensemble and overlapping pressures make room for context that a simpler procedural often leaves out. The placement is a judgment about dramatic realism, not a verified finding that it is more procedurally accurate than every other show on this list.

What police dramas usually leave out
Routine work is less visible than action. In a 2003 occupational portrayal article, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics quoted Cecil Greek, then an associate professor of criminology at Florida State University, estimating that officers spent 30 to 50 percent of their time writing reports. The article contrasted that historical estimate with television’s tendency to show action rather than paperwork. It is not a current, nationwide time-use measurement, but it illustrates why a drama can feel convincing in its calls while omitting a large part of the job.
That gap matters when comparing shows: a gritty look, handheld camerawork or a convincing uniform does not establish that a series gets workload, jurisdictional rules or investigative pace right. Culture, procedure and ordinary work are separate tests.
What the evidence can and cannot establish
- Practitioner opinion: Sky News reported inspector Liz Cokayne-Delves’ favorable assessment of Happy Valley; it is attributed opinion, not a standardized evaluation.
- Production consultation: Reporting on Southland describes officer input and technical advice, useful evidence of effort but not a guarantee of scene-by-scene accuracy.
- Agency caution: The FBI explicitly recognizes that portrayals vary, from reasonably accurate presentations to fictionalized versions created for dramatic effect.
- Historical workload example: The BLS article’s report-writing estimate comes from 2003 and should not be generalized as a present-day statistic.
For viewers asking how realistic a show’s portrayal of small-town policing and crime in the UK is, Happy Valley has the clearest specific practitioner endorsement in the evidence cited here. That endorsement does not settle every detail, and it should not be generalized to policing in other countries. More broadly, the ranking is most useful as a guide to what each kind of drama emphasizes—not as a factual scorecard for real police departments.
