Yes. Sonic had conspicuously human-like teeth in the first trailer for the 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The design was changed before the film’s release: the later Sonic still had teeth, but they were less prominent and looked more cartoon-like. That was a movie adaptation choice, not a rule about how Sonic looks in every game or version.
Which Sonic design had human-like teeth?
The clearest reference is the CG Sonic shown in the movie’s first 2019 trailer. His teeth were visible and unusually human-looking, contributing to a more humanized appearance than audiences expected from the game character. The Washington Post’s November 2019 coverage specifically contrasted those teeth with the later design.

Did the redesigned movie Sonic still have teeth?
Yes. The redesign did not remove Sonic’s teeth; it made them less conspicuous. The Washington Post described the later teeth as more cartoon-like, while the Los Angeles Times reported that they were essentially similar but more hidden and less shiny. The change was therefore in their visibility and presentation, rather than a shift to a toothless character.
Why did the film give Sonic visible teeth?
Sonic’s teeth are not consistently visible in the games, so the film’s artists had to interpret details that the original designs did not always show. Milady Bridges, director of Drexel University’s animation and visual effects program, explained that translating a 2D character into 3D raises practical design questions: a character must look convincing from angles and in situations that a drawing may never depict. Her 2020 interview with Drexel discusses those choices.

The movie also placed a stylized game character alongside real actors in a live-action setting. Director Jeff Fowler described the challenge in a 2020 WIRED interview: “The challenge was always going to be that this is a character that’s existed in games from the 16-bit era. Knowing that he was going to be on Earth with real actors, we knew he’d require a level of detail that no-one’s ever seen before.” A highly detailed rendering made choices about facial features more noticeable than they tend to be in the games.

No. Sonic is a fictional character whose appearance varies by medium and adaptation; one movie design does not establish a definitive anatomy for every game, show, or other portrayal. SEGA identifies the original Sonic the Hedgehog game as a 1991 release, decades before the 2019 movie adaptation. SEGA’s corporate history provides that franchise context. The film’s teeth are best understood as one interpretation of a familiar character, rather than a discovery about a real animal or a universal feature of Sonic’s design.
