That was not disclosed as $30 million in cash for his return or WrestleMania 40 storyline: the public filing does not give a separate fee for either.
What the $30 million figure means
TKO Group Holdings, WWE’s parent company, disclosed in its first-quarter 2024 filing that WWE entered an Independent Services Contractor and Merchandising Agreement with Johnson during the quarter. In consideration for services and related intellectual-property grants and licenses, he received an RSU award with an aggregate value of $30 million. The agreement covered promotional and other services as well as intellectual-property rights; it was not described as payment for one event or storyline. TKO’s Q1 2024 filing
RSUs are equity compensation, not the same thing as a cash salary or a one-time appearance fee. The filing’s $30 million figure is the award’s aggregate value; it does not establish that Johnson received $30 million in cash when he returned to WWE.
Did he have a separate WrestleMania 40 fee?
The public filing reviewed here does not disclose a specific payment for Johnson’s WWE return, his WrestleMania 40 appearance, or the storyline. It reports compensation under a broader services and merchandising agreement, so attributing the full award to WrestleMania 40 would go beyond what the disclosure says.

In a CNBC interview reported by the Associated Press on January 23, 2024, Johnson declined to discuss the deal’s financial value. AP quoted him saying, “I owe that name everything,” referring to “The Rock,” and added that he said, “Without that name there’d be no wrestling career. There’d be no Hollywood career.” Associated Press report
How the other disclosed amounts differ
TKO reported several figures associated with the agreement, but they measure different things and should not be added together as a WrestleMania payday.

| $9 million | Equity-based compensation expense TKO recorded in the quarter ended March 31, 2024, associated with the RSU award. It is a quarterly accounting expense, not a disclosed event fee. TKO’s Q1 2024 filing |
| $0.1 million | Royalties Johnson earned in the three months ended March 31, 2024. The filing says he is entitled to annual royalties, including on qualifying licensed products using assigned intellectual property, name, and likeness. TKO’s Q1 2024 filing |
| $1.9 million | Travel expenses TKO incurred in connection with services during the three months ended March 31, 2024; $1.7 million was payable to Johnson as of March 31. Travel expense is not salary or a performance fee. TKO’s Q1 2024 filing |
The license to WWE covered certain categories of licensed professional-wrestling products and could run for up to 10 years, subject to earlier termination rights. That broader scope is another reason the $30 million award cannot be assigned to a single WrestleMania storyline based on the filing. TKO’s Q1 2024 filing

TKO’s 2025 annual report search result reports equity-based compensation expense associated with the award of $17.7 million in 2024 and $4.0 million in 2025. Those are accounting expenses recognized in the respective years, not cash paid for a WrestleMania appearance and not a replacement for the award’s $30 million aggregate value.
