James Gunn said in October 2025 that he was not planning a third season “right now,” while leaving open the possibility of one later. In September 2026, reports described a cryptic emoji response from Gunn, but it did not confirm a renewal, a release date, or a return project.
What James Gunn said about season 3
In an interview published October 11, 2025, Screen Brief asked Gunn whether he was planning a third season after the season 2 cliffhanger. He answered: “No. This is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now. That doesn’t mean there won’t be a third season, never say never, but right now, no.”
That answer was specific to the plans at the time: a dedicated season 3 was not then in the works, but Gunn did not rule one out permanently. He added, “This is about the future of the DCU. And Peacemaker’s still an important character.” Read the Screen Brief interview.
Did the 2026 emoji response confirm a renewal?
No. Reports published September 1 and September 14, 2026 described Gunn responding to a question about season 3 or Peacemaker’s return with a thinking-face emoji. The response was ambiguous: it supplied no schedule, project details, or confirmation that a third season had been ordered. It should not be treated as a renewal announcement. Could Peacemaker return in another DCU story?
Gunn said in 2025 that Peacemaker’s story would play out through the wider DCU and other stories. TheWrap reported that the broader story includes Salvation and Checkmate, with a connection to Lanterns, and that a future appearance by Peacemaker had not been ruled out. Those are indications of possible story continuation beyond the series, not confirmation of a particular appearance or a season 3 order. TheWrap’s coverage.
The distinction matters: John Cena’s character may return in the DCU without HBO ordering another Peacemaker season. The sources available do not identify his next project or when he will appear.
