The $1,000 Anthropologie rock was a joke, not a real product. TikTok creator Phoebe Adams started the prank with a stone she found outside; Anthropologie later joined in with staged displays and social posts. The rock was fake. The retailer’s response was real.
How the rock prank started
On September 14, 2025, Phoebe Adams posted a TikTok showing a rock she had found outside and pretended it was a new Anthropologie purchase. In the clip, she told her boyfriend she had bought it on sale for $150. The claim was part of the gag, not a real purchase. The Daily Dot’s September 25, 2025 report said Adams’ original video had more than 11.8 million views by then.
The premise worked because Anthropologie is associated with distinctive, sometimes expensive home decor. The retailer has sold items such as geode bookends, petrified wood slabs, and sculptures, making an absurdly priced decorative stone feel just plausible enough to spark a debate. That context does not mean the viral rock was for sale. FindArticles’ October 25, 2025 analysis said the four-figure rock was not listed as a corporate product.
Why the title says $1,000
The $1,000 figure belongs to mock-rock content, not a verified Anthropologie price tag for a normal product listing. Coverage of the joke described a staged in-store rock display and brand-made fake-sale video; those props extended the prank rather than announcing a rock collection. The Daily Dot’s account documents the brand’s participation.

Vogue later reported that Anthropologie’s team made CEO Tricia Smith a palm-sized mock rock marked $1,000 for her desk. In its October 29, 2025 interview with Vogue, Smith explained why the brand was willing to join the joke: “You have to make light of yourself as a brand — I think younger generations want to see brands participate with an authentic voice.” She also described the unpredictability of viral moments: “No one can expect or anticipate it, so how do you respond when something like the rock comes up?” Vogue’s interview with Smith recounts the anecdote and her comments.
Why people kept sharing it
The joke invited viewers to weigh taste against price: would an unusual rock count as decor, and what could make it worth hundreds—or even a deliberately ridiculous $1,000? Coverage captured the debate prompt as “Would you pay for this?” That is a question framing the conversation, not the result of a measured survey. FindArticles’ analysis connects the reaction to the retailer’s reputation for unusual decorative objects.

Adams’ rock was a found stone presented as a fictional purchase, and the $1,000 mock-up was a prop. Anthropologie’s real history of selling decorative stone objects helped make the joke legible, but it does not establish that the specific viral rock was merchandise.
