The 55,000 figure is Parks Canada’s estimate for the entire Western Hudson Bay beluga population—not a live count of whales in Churchill or on the camera. During peak season, Parks Canada estimates that 3,000–5,000 whales explore the Churchill River estuary daily.
Where to watch the Churchill beluga live cam
Polar Bears International’s Beluga Cams page provides access to seasonal live views from a boat near Churchill. The stream can show the waterline and the underwater world; Explore.org describes its Beluga Boat Cam as an underwater view from a boat guided through the Churchill River Estuary. Depending on conditions, viewers may see whales swimming, feeding, or nursing calves.
The camera is not guaranteed to be live at a particular moment. Explore.org says fog can cancel a scheduled trip and tides can affect tour timing. Check the camera page for current status; when a live feed is unavailable, Polar Bears International offers highlights from the season.
Are 55,000 belugas in the Churchill River?
No. Parks Canada estimates approximately 55,000 belugas in the Western Hudson Bay population. That is a population estimate across a broad region, not a count gathered at Churchill or visible on camera. The whales use summer areas extending from the Ontario border to just north of the Nunavut border, with the largest gatherings near the Churchill, Seal, and Nelson river estuaries. Parks Canada separately estimates that 3,000–5,000 whales explore the Churchill River estuary daily during peak season. These figures describe different scopes: a regional population and daily peak estuary use.

Some camera-partner descriptions use approximately 57,000, while the Port of Churchill FAQ says about 60,000 gather in the Hudson Bay area and about 3,000 visit the Churchill River Basin. These are differently scoped or rounded descriptions, not precise real-time counts. The best-supported way to interpret the headline is that tens of thousands make up the Western Hudson Bay population, while thousands visit Churchill’s estuary in peak season.
When do belugas arrive near Churchill?
Parks Canada says belugas arrive from mid-June to early July and begin migrating north again in mid-September. The federal COSEWIC assessment describes numbers in the Churchill, Nelson, and Seal estuaries building from mid-June until late July. Migration is not a single synchronized event: the assessment notes that exact autumn timing and route were not known, while tag work it describes observed an easterly migration beginning in early September. For the current camera schedule and actual conditions, use the stream page rather than treating these seasonal dates as a daily forecast.

Why the estuaries matter to belugas
Summer estuaries offer more than a place to gather. Parks Canada identifies predator protection, moulting, feeding, and calving as important functions of this habitat. Polar Bears International also describes the Churchill estuary as a place where belugas feed and have calves. The camera’s close perspective can make the estuary look like the whole migration, but it shows only a small window onto a population that ranges much farther across Hudson Bay.

Beluga research, conservation, and a way to help
Parks Canada describes the Western Hudson Bay population as stable and Not at Risk under COSEWIC, while also identifying pressures expected to increase with climate warming: vessel activity and marine noise, development such as hydroelectric projects, predation, and harvest. A status category is not a guarantee that the population faces no pressures.
Monitoring around the Port of Churchill is examining beluga distribution and interactions with vessels. Oceans North reported on July 15, 2026, that a previous pilot camera project recorded 11,705 photographs over 72 days and detected 1,887 whales. Researchers added cameras overlooking the port gallery to improve views of vessels and whales. This work is intended to improve understanding; it does not establish that shipping has caused a decline in beluga numbers.

Belugas depend heavily on sound, making vessel noise a research concern noted by Oceans North. Polar Bears International explains that sea ice can also provide protection from orcas: belugas lack a dorsal fin and can travel through narrow passages beneath ice. These points describe ecological context and research concerns, not a measured local impact from a particular vessel or event.
If you want to contribute directly to research, Beluga Bits invites volunteers to classify screenshots from the camera. The classifications help researchers study beluga social structure and natural history. In a July 2024 release, Polar Bears International reported nearly 22,000 registered participants, nearly 5 million photo classifications, and roughly 22,000 volunteer hours since the project launched; those are historical cumulative figures, not current totals.
