When Tim Walz became Kamala Harris’s running mate in 2024, online commenters began suggesting that Steve Martin play him on Saturday Night Live. Their reasoning was subjective: they saw a resemblance and thought Martin’s folksy screen persona might suit Walz. The suggestion was fan speculation, not a casting announcement.
Why Steve Martin came up
BGR reported on August 6, 2024, that commenters on X were proposing Martin for the role. The article pointed to perceived resemblance and a folksy quality as the appeal; those are opinions, not verified claims about how closely the two look or act.
Two anonymous posts cited by BGR captured the idea: “SNL get Steve Martin on the phone NOW” and “so Steve Martin is definitely gonna play Walz on SNL right.” They are examples of reactions, not evidence of a casting decision or a representative poll.
How much support did the posts show?
BGR reported that one post had 1.5 million views and another had more than 2 million as of the article’s August 6, 2024 publication. Those are publisher-reported view-count snapshots, not independently verified totals or a measure of how many people supported the suggestion.

The discussion followed Walz becoming Harris’s running mate and came amid expectations that Maya Rudolph would return to portray Harris. That context helps explain why fans were imagining a pairing, but it did not establish that Martin had been approached or selected to play Walz.
NBC’s official Saturday Night Live page provides season 50 episode context. The retrieved page information does not identify who portrayed Walz, so it does not confirm Martin’s casting.
