The watch in In the Lost Lands is the Blancpain Villeret Carrousel Répétition Minutes Chronographe Flyback. Director Paul W.S. Anderson and the film’s producers chose it for its timeless appearance and intricate mechanics, then made it a relic from the characters’ vanished world. The real watch appeared on set for key scenes; a digital recreation was created for action and extreme close-ups.
Which Blancpain watch appears in In the Lost Lands?
Blancpain identifies it as the Villeret Carrousel Répétition Minutes Chronographe Flyback—not simply a Villeret, a name shared by other watches in the collection. The model combines a carrousel, a minute repeater and a flyback chronograph. Blancpain describes its red-gold case, open-worked dial and sapphire display back. Blancpain’s announcement names the watch and explains its role in the film.
Time+Tide reported a 45 mm case and a retail price of US$503,800 in its 13 March 2025 article. That is a dated publication figure, not a verified current quote. Time+Tide’s report provides that price and its technical description.
Why did the filmmakers choose it?
Anderson said producing partner Jeremy Bolt, a watch enthusiast, brought forward candidate watches. Anderson approached the choice as casting: “I cast the watch as you would cast an actor, as the best watch for the role.” He wanted “a timeless, magical look,” and the Blancpain’s complexity gave the camera detail to reveal in close shots.

Blancpain’s 18 March 2025 announcement quotes Anderson: “The Blancpain Villeret Carrousel Répétition Minutes Chronographe Flyback was the perfect fit for the role as it perfectly combined a timeless look and complexity that we were looking for.” Its open-worked dial and visible mechanics suited a film that could move from the watch’s overall appearance into its intricate workings.
Anderson also connected Blancpain’s long history with the film’s end-of-times setting. The watch is treated in the story as a rare, valuable relic from the old world—a surviving timepiece in a society that has returned to older ways of marking time. It becomes part of the characters’ quest rather than a passing product cameo.

Was the watch a paid placement?
Hodinkee reported that Anderson said Blancpain did not pay to place the watch and that the filmmakers retained artistic freedom. That is Anderson’s account of the arrangement, not independently audited contract information. Hodinkee’s 13 March 2025 interview covers his selection process and the placement.

The physical Blancpain was on set for several days and used alongside the actors in key scenes. For action sequences and extreme close-ups, the production created a digital version. Blancpain says the recreation took five months, using macro retrofits on advanced scanners at maximum resolution. Rain made the work especially demanding: the digital asset had to reproduce how light entered the dial and reflected across the movement.

Co-producer Dennis Berardi told Hodinkee the team could not use Blancpain’s classified production drawings, so it scanned an actual watch instead. He described taking more than 300 images and refining subtle movement textures and lighting. His account also puts the recreation work at about five months.
The distinction matters on screen: the real watch was used for key scenes, while the digital recreation let the filmmakers show it in shots where action or extreme magnification called for a computer-generated asset. The production’s digital work was not a second physical prop.
