Henry Cavill auditioned for James Bond in the casting process for Casino Royale (2006), but Daniel Craig got the role. Director Martin Campbell later praised Cavill’s audition and said he would have made an excellent Bond—while also explaining that Cavill looked too young at the time. The footage that resurfaced online in 2025 offers a glimpse of the casting process, not proof of how a Cavill-led film would have turned out.
What the surfaced audition tape shows
In early February 2025, videos presented as Bond audition tapes appeared online. Reporting identified Henry Cavill, Antony Starr, Rupert Friend and Sam Worthington among the actors shown performing the same scene from GoldenEye. The material is commonly described as a 2005 screen test, but the public videos should be treated as footage presented as audition material, not as an independently authenticated, complete studio master.

Gizmodo reported that the uploader was identified as Ron South and that how he obtained the videos was unclear. ComicBook.com reported South’s claim that he found them in a recycling bin at a movie studio. That account is an attributed claim, not a verified chain of custody. Gizmodo’s February 2025 report and ComicBook.com’s coverage describe the footage and its uncertain provenance.
The tape can show how Cavill approached a short audition scene. It cannot establish how he would have played Bond across a finished film, or what choices the filmmakers would have made around him.

Why Cavill did not get the role
Campbell, who directed Casino Royale, later gave two connected reasons for the outcome: he thought Cavill looked young, and the final choice was made collectively. In the retrospective comments reported by GamesRadar+, Campbell said: “He looked great in the audition. His acting was tremendous. And look, if Daniel didn’t exist Henry would have made an excellent Bond.”
That is high praise, but it is not the same as saying Cavill was one decision away from certainly winning. Campbell described the decision process as a group discussion involving himself, producers and the casting director, with a unanimous decision required. The Independent quoted him describing a table of “eight or nine” people and a pool of eight candidates. The available accounts establish Campbell’s view of Cavill and the process he described; they do not establish that age was the sole reason every decision-maker preferred Craig.

Contemporary retrospective coverage places Cavill at around 22 during the casting process. Campbell’s concern was how young he appeared for the part then—not that he could never play Bond. GamesRadar+ reports Campbell’s assessment, while The Independent’s June 2023 account describes the group decision.

Casino Royale rebooted the Bond film series in 2006 with Daniel Craig as 007. Cavill’s version is a counterfactual: there is no completed Cavill-led Casino Royale to compare with Craig’s film, so claims about how it would have changed the franchise or Cavill’s career remain speculation.

The most grounded comparison is between Campbell’s favorable assessment and the practical concern he named. Cavill impressed him in the audition, but looked young for the role at that moment in the casting. The resurfaced scene adds a visual reference for viewers, while the reported decision process makes clear that casting was not simply one director choosing alone.
It is tempting to imagine a different chain of careers if Cavill had become Bond: later roles, franchise plans and even the shape of the series might have changed. Those are interesting scenarios, not documented outcomes. The tape is a snapshot of an audition; it is not a preview of a film that was never made.
