A Chinese production team has proposed a 25-minute documentary about Samarkand, planned in Chinese and English, but the reported announcement does not confirm that filming has begun or that a crew has traveled to Uzbekistan. The project is called “From Liangzhu to the World,” according to Dunyo Information Agency’s October 6, 2026 report.
What has been announced
Diplomats of Uzbekistan met in Hangzhou with Jiang Yun, director of the Zhejiang International Communication Center. The Chinese side outlined “From Liangzhu to the World,” an international project about ancient cities being developed in cooperation with the Liangzhu Museum. Its proposed Samarkand film would run 25 minutes and be made in Chinese and English, as reported by Dunyo IA.
The report says the Chinese side is prepared to send a filming crew to Uzbekistan. That describes readiness, not a confirmed production schedule: the report gives no travel or filming dates and does not say filming has started. Nor does it confirm permits, a completed film, or a release date.
Who may be involved—and what is not confirmed
The Chinese side said it wanted to establish contact with Uzbekistan’s National Television and Radio Company, the Tourism Committee and its Samarkand regional department, and the Samarkand State Museum. These are prospective contacts named in the report, not confirmed production partners. No broadcaster, streaming service, distribution agreement, or release platform is identified.

The announcement also does not identify individual crew members, a director for the Samarkand film, or specific filming locations. The project title refers to Liangzhu, but the report does not provide a detailed outline of the documentary’s narrative or say how Liangzhu will figure in the Samarkand episode.
Why Samarkand is a fitting subject
UNESCO lists “Samarkand – Crossroad of Cultures” as a World Heritage property, inscribed in 2001. Its archive describes the historic town as a crossroads and melting pot of world cultures and names the Registan Mosque and madrasas, Bibi-Khanum Mosque, Shakhi-Zinda compound, Gur-Emir ensemble, and Ulugh-Beg’s Observatory among the city’s major monuments. These landmarks offer clear historical and architectural context for a film about Samarkand, though the new project has not confirmed which sites it will feature. See the UNESCO documentary archive and the UNESCO World Heritage Convention page for Uzbekistan.

There is an earlier international Samarkand documentary
UNESCO’s archive records a 2001 short documentary titled “The Blue Capital: Samarkand, Crossroads of Cultures,” produced by NHK, Japan Broadcasting Corporation, and UNESCO TV. It is a precedent for international documentary interest in the city, but no connection between that film and “From Liangzhu to the World” is reported. The archive entry is available through UNESCO.

What the announcement does not establish about permits
A UNESCO-published Uzbekistan film-sector profile from 2023 described Uzbekfilm as the state organization issuing permits to foreign film companies and the National Film Commission of Uzbekistan as providing organizational, production, and technical assistance. That profile is historical context, not confirmation of the current permit process or of any permits for this project. The announcement itself does not say permits have been obtained. The profile is available as a UNESCO country profile.
