A Long Hard Streak is a 60-minute documentary about Billy Dean Anderson, a fugitive and outsider artist who, according to the filmmakers, lived for almost five years in a Tennessee cave while on the run from the FBI. The film follows the contrast between the criminal history described in its project materials and the paintings and journal Anderson created in hiding, asking whether art, nature and community offered a form of redemption.
What is A Long Hard Streak about?
The documentary centers on Anderson’s life in a cave and the art he made there. Director Scott Rabideau says Anderson painted canvases and kept a journal underground. The film treats those works as a way to approach the person behind his criminal history, and as a means of communication with friends and loved ones.
The International Documentary Association’s project listing also describes the film through the themes of art, redemption and the legacy Anderson left in an isolated Southern community. These are the documentary’s framing and themes, not a settled judgment about Anderson’s life.
Who was Billy Dean Anderson?
The film’s official project account says Anderson was raised by his grandparents in Pall Mall on Tennessee’s Upper Cumberland Plateau and was involved with church as a boy before turning to crime. The same account describes multiple imprisonments, three shootouts with law enforcement, three prison escapes and placement on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list. These consequential biographical details are attributed to the project: the sources available for this article do not include primary FBI or court records to independently verify them.

What did Anderson create while living in the cave?
Rabideau says Anderson made numerous paintings and kept a journal during his years underground. According to the director, many of the paintings remain in homes and churches in Tennessee, Indiana, Kentucky and elsewhere. The project presents the artwork as both personal expression and a link to people outside the cave.
The official project page reproduces this poem excerpt and attributes it to Anderson, written while he lived in the cave. It does not give a date:

Tennessee Tech Archives documented 2025 screenings held with WCTE and Rabideau, where attendees had an opportunity to engage with Anderson’s artwork. That record shows local and educational interest; it does not establish an ongoing public exhibition or a place to buy the paintings.

Where can you watch A Long Hard Streak?
The project site announces a national PBS broadcast. NETA’s catalog lists one 60-minute program and shows rights from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2029. Its entry marks linear live streaming as available but lists no V.O.D. rights. These catalog details do not confirm a local air date, availability at every PBS station or consumer on-demand access.
