Pursuit of Happiness is a three-part Minnesota PBS documentary series hosted by Amanda Brinkman. It follows nine Minnesotans and brings their personal stories together with expert perspectives to ask what happiness means—and how people pursue it. Minnesota PBS announced a local premiere for October 5, 2026, and a national public television rollout beginning November 1, 2026; both dates have passed, so current viewing options depend on listings and availability.
What is Pursuit of Happiness about?
The series uses stories from Minnesotans and their communities to explore happiness as a personal and social question, rather than offer a single formula for achieving it. Minnesota PBS identifies wealth, resilience, technology, purpose and wellbeing among its themes. In an October 5 interview, producer Kate McDonald also discussed power, freedom, liberty, autonomy, community, connection and education.
Executive producer Marissa Blahnik said the project began with the question, “What makes you happy?” and became more complex as the team explored what happiness means. Host Amanda Brinkman similarly asks whether the things people pursue will truly make them happy. The series’ framing draws on the Declaration of Independence’s phrase “the pursuit of happiness,” considering what that ideal might mean now as well as in its historical context.
What do the featured Minnesotans have in common?
McDonald described purpose and fulfillment, community and connection, and autonomy—the freedom to make choices—as threads among the people featured. That perspective links individual wellbeing to relationships, belonging and agency, alongside material concerns such as wealth.

The producer said the series aims to be hopeful without ignoring difficulty. The stories are intended to challenge assumptions about what makes a fulfilling life, not to portray happiness as effortless or guaranteed. Minnesota is the setting, but producers expected the experiences and questions to resonate with viewers elsewhere.

Why are the stories set in Minnesota?
The project explores a question of national interest through the lives and communities of Minnesotans. The Minnesota Star Tribune’s October 5 interview reports that the original national concept was narrowed to Minnesota stories after public media funding cuts. McDonald said producers still expected people outside the state to find common ground in the experiences shown.
The Star Tribune also notes that the project’s initial premise drew on Minnesota’s reputation as a happy state. The sources cited here do not establish the publisher, year or methodology behind a specific state happiness ranking, so the series’ premise should not be read as a verified ranking or statistical finding.

What the series can—and cannot—answer
Pursuit of Happiness offers personal stories and expert perspectives on themes that include purpose, connection, autonomy, wealth and resilience. Its stated approach is to explore what people mean by happiness and what may contribute to a fulfilling life. It does not establish one prescription that guarantees happiness, and the available announcements do not provide episode-level detail or current, location-specific access information.
