Kim A. Snyder’s documentary The Librarians follows real librarians and community advocates responding to book challenges and restrictions. The American Library Association publicly names Becky Calzada, Carolyn Foote, Amanda Jones, Martha Hickson, Suzette Baker and Audrey Wilson Youngblood among its participants—but the list is not complete: the film also includes anonymous storytellers. This is the nonfiction film about librarians, not an unrelated fantasy franchise with the same title.

What is The Librarians about?

The film examines librarians’ experiences with restrictions on library content and what those disputes mean for education and public life, according to the PBS Independent Lens listing. The American Library Association’s January 2025 announcement identifies Texas, Florida and Louisiana among the places where librarians and advocates have responded to challenges.

The film’s official synopsis says the Texas Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories. That is the film’s stated figure and characterization, not an independently verified count here. The documentary advances a broader argument about access to information, education and the freedom to read; that is the filmmakers’ framing, not a neutral finding about the motives of every organization or political actor portrayed.

Which real people are publicly named?

In its January 23, 2025 Sundance announcement, the ALA names these librarians and advocates in connection with the documentary and its premiere:

These names are examples, not a complete cast list. The film’s official discussion guide acknowledges anonymous storytellers and asks audiences to consider why some participants remained anonymous. Their identities should not be inferred or sought from the film’s public materials.

Who made the documentary?

Kim A. Snyder directed and produced The Librarians. The ALA credits Janique L. Robillard, Maria Cuomo Cole and Jana Edelbaum as producers, and Sarah Jessica Parker as an executive producer through Pretty Matches Productions. Snyder’s engagement guide says the project began with book bans in Texas and Florida and grew into a wider investigation over three years. That account describes Snyder’s filmmaking process.

The same guide names community participants Rev. Jeffrey Dove and Courtney Gore. It also presents the profiled librarians as people from varied backgrounds. The filmmakers’ account and the documentary’s argument are useful context, but they should be distinguished from independently established findings about specific groups or political motivations.

What can readers explore alongside the film?

Amanda Jones’s book, That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America, offers a related account from one of the librarians featured in the film. It is a separate book, not a tie-in edition of the documentary. The ALA identifies Jones as its author in the same Sundance announcement.

The film’s official discussion guide can help groups structure a screening conversation. Among its prompts are how documentary filmmaking suits this story and how to respond to the claim, “we’re not banning books.”
