What did Alex Gibney say about Musk’s reported Pentagon appointment?
In a Los Angeles Times interview about his documentary Musk, filmmaker Alex Gibney reacted to reports that Musk would help lead a new Pentagon project examining the future of warfare. Gibney said, “I find it terrifying. It’s like putting the Joker in charge of the Manhattan Project.” (Los Angeles Times.)
The comparison conveys Gibney’s concern about Musk’s growing influence. It is his characterization, not a formal description of the project or an official judgment by the Pentagon.
What is known about the Pentagon project?
The cited Los Angeles Times coverage describes it only as a new Pentagon project examining the future of warfare and reports that Musk would help lead it. It does not establish the project’s formal name, terms, structure, authority, deliverables, or current status. The available description therefore does not support more specific claims about what the project will do or what powers Musk would have.

Why did Gibney raise the possibility of a bailout?
Gibney suspected the arrangement could amount to a bailout of xAI. That was his suspicion, not a confirmed finding: the cited coverage does not prove that a bailout occurred or establish a financial motive.
How does Gibney’s documentary approach Musk?
The Los Angeles Times interview says Musk draws on interviews with Musk’s family, former friends and employees, journalists, and business associates. Musk did not participate; after he declined to be interviewed, the filmmakers used a computer-generated avatar. (Los Angeles Times.)
