Conceived in 1974–75, the project spent roughly two years in preparation before its scale and demands proved difficult to finance. Its story survives in the art and plans it left behind, and in Frank Pavich’s documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune.
What was Jodorowsky’s Dune?
It was a mid-1970s attempt by Chilean-French filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky to adapt Frank Herbert’s science-fiction novel for the screen. Accounts date the project’s start to either 1974 or 1975, so 1974–75 best captures the available chronology. The project was a proposed feature, not a completed film: there is no Jodorowsky-directed Dune movie featuring the recruited cast.
Jodorowsky did not intend simply to transfer Herbert’s novel to the screen. In a retrospective interview, he described wanting to make the film before reading the book and then finding the novel too literary to serve as a direct blueprint. He planned to reshape the material around his own artistic vision. On the official documentary page, he described the ambition this way: “For me, Dune will be the coming of a god. I wanted to make something sacred, free, with new perspective. Open the mind!”
Did Mick Jagger and Salvador Dalí agree to be in Dune?
They were among the performers Jodorowsky intended to cast. The proposed lineup also included Orson Welles, David Carradine, and Jodorowsky’s young son, Brontis. These were plans for the unmade feature, not performances captured in a finished film.

Jodorowsky recalled that Dalí requested $100,000 per minute for his participation. “He asked $100,000 per minute. I said, ‘OK, you want that for a minute—I’ll have you for one minute.’” The anecdote conveys the scale of the filmmaker’s ambitions, but it does not change the basic distinction: Dalí was recruited for a role in a film that never went into production.
Who was making the film?
Jodorowsky gathered artists and collaborators from several disciplines to shape the proposed film’s look, effects, and sound. The creative group included Jean Giraud, known as Mœbius, H.R. Giger, Chris Foss, and Dan O’Bannon. Pink Floyd and Magma were named as intended music collaborators.

The project’s surviving preparation was substantial. Jodorowsky’s official documentary site says the team worked for two years, producing more than 3,000 storyboards alongside paintings, costumes, and a screenplay as they prepared to seek Hollywood financing. These materials document an extensive development effort, not a secretly completed feature.
Why was Jodorowsky’s Dune never made?
The available accounts point to the project’s scale and the difficulty of keeping financial backing, rather than establishing one definitive cause. A UniFrance press-kit essay says the project’s “pharaonic proportions” frightened its backers. A catalogue from the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association says Hollywood abandoned it after Jodorowsky refused to cut from the long script. These are retrospective descriptions, not a complete financing record, so the cancellation should not be reduced to a single uncontested event.

Producer Michel Seydoux, quoted on the official Sony Classics documentary page, summed up the disappointment: “It should have been enough. But it wasn’t.” The film’s large creative ambitions and extensive preparation were not enough to secure the backing needed to make it.
What happened to the project’s plans?
The film’s storyboards, artwork, and other development work became the tangible record of a movie that never reached production. Frank Pavich’s documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune revisits the project and its unrealized vision. Sony lists the documentary as available on Blu-ray; it is a film about the proposed feature, not the feature itself. Current stock and marketplace availability can change. Was Jodorowsky’s Dune influential?
Its influence is best described as a matter of documented comparisons and personal recollections, not as a proven chain of direct borrowing. A Boston Globe review of the storyboard book described images that prefigure elements later seen in Star Wars, The Terminator, and Contact. An Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association catalogue points to ideas and images it sees in Blade Runner, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Prometheus, The Terminator, and Star Wars. Resemblance alone does not establish that the unmade film caused those later films or that every similarity reflects borrowing.
Jodorowsky offered a more specific account in an interview, crediting Dan O’Bannon with carrying members of the prepared team into Alien. That is Jodorowsky’s recollection and interpretation. The project’s surviving concepts make it possible to discuss its reach, but they do not make its proposed film equivalent to a released work with a measurable, settled impact.

How is this different from the released Dune films?
Jodorowsky’s project is often discussed alongside later screen adaptations because all draw on Herbert’s novel. The essential difference is production status: his version remained a development project, represented by materials such as storyboards and a screenplay. Later Dune adaptations are completed films that audiences can watch. The available accounts establish Jodorowsky’s unusually expansive approach, but do not support a full comparison of the later films’ runtimes, visual designs, or adaptation choices.
