UNU-EHS’s documentary Chinamperos: Preserving Ancestral Farming Practices in Mexico City has traveled from Xochimilco to COP30 and film festivals across Europe, then returned to Mexico for a field visit and screenings in Xochimilco and Mexico City. The film brings the institute’s 2025 research on interconnected disaster risks into the lives and farming practices of Xochimilco’s chinamperos; its local legacy, UNU-EHS says, includes helping inspire a community dialogue initiative.
What the documentary is about
Chinamperos: Preserving Ancestral Farming Practices in Mexico City was inspired by the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security’s (UNU-EHS) 2025 Interconnected Disaster Risks report. It focuses on chinamperos, the farmers of Xochimilco who cultivate chinampas: fertile plots built on wetlands using agricultural practices passed down through generations. The film places those practices in the context of pressures including urbanization, environmental degradation and climate change. UNU-EHS’s account of the film’s return to Mexico City describes the documentary as a way to bring the report’s interconnected risks to life through the experience of a particular community.
The 2025 report discusses five fundamental changes societies can make to reduce risk amid intensifying climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and inequality. That five-part framework is the report’s focus; it is not a count of changes depicted or achieved by the documentary.
From Xochimilco to international screenings—and back
UNU-EHS traces the film’s path from Xochimilco to COP30 and film festivals across Europe, followed by a field visit and screenings in Xochimilco and Mexico City. Its account says the return brought together community members, researchers, students, UN representatives and local officials. The feature describes a journey between international circulation and the place whose farming traditions and challenges the film portrays.

The available account does not give screening attendance, a count of festivals or a measured audience reach. It therefore supports a description of the film’s route and events, not a claim about how many people saw it or what those screenings changed.
What the film’s return meant to people in Xochimilco
Mariana Páez, identified by UNU-EHS as being from Xochimilco and featured in the documentary, recalled that chinampero Samuel Avelino “felt heard.” Avelino died earlier in 2026. UNU-EHS reports that shortly before his death he shared prior UN News coverage of the documentary. The recollection conveys the significance of being represented; it is not evidence that the film resolved the pressures facing local farmers.

UNU-EHS also says the documentary helped inspire the Permanent Seminar on Xochimilco Studies (SEPEX), a local initiative fostering dialogue about the territory and its culture. That is a reported contribution to conversation. The account does not present an independent evaluation showing that SEPEX or the film has settled disagreements or reversed environmental and urban pressures.

The UN News feature’s framing, available in a syndicated copy, presents the film as creating room for people to meet and discuss differences rather than resolving those differences. This distinction matters: a documentary can make research more tangible, invite attention to local knowledge and provide a shared subject for discussion, while the underlying challenges require work beyond a screening. UNU-EHS’s account documents the film’s circulation, return and reported role in inspiring SEPEX; it does not quantify lasting social or environmental outcomes.
