These 10 true-crime documentaries on Hulu cover murder investigations, fraud, cult coercion, family abuse and scandal. The selection is an editorial shortlist—not an objective Hulu ranking—based on variety of cases, investigative focus, format and use of survivor or family accounts. Hulu’s guide dated October 31, 2025 is a starting point, not proof that every title remains available or included with a standard subscription today. Check each title’s Hulu page for current regional availability and plan requirements before watching.

1. Scamanda
This ABC News Studios series follows the story of Amanda Riley and the cancer narrative that drew attention, support and donations. It is a fraud-focused pick for viewers interested in how an online story gains credibility and affects the people who respond to it.
2. The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst
This six-part series examines Robert Durst and crimes involving Kathleen McCormack, Susan Berman and Morris Black. Its multi-part format gives room to follow an investigation and its surrounding questions over time. Hulu’s October 31, 2025 guide says this title requires the Disney+, Hulu, Max bundle or a Max add-on; confirm current access on the title page.

3. An American Murder Mystery: The Staircase
This three-part documentary examines the death of Kathleen Peterson through theories, trials and interviews. Hulu describes it as a series that “dissects and inspects theories, secrets, trials, and interviews surrounding the case.” The case has competing interpretations, so treat the documentary’s presentation as an account of the case rather than a substitute for weighing the evidence independently.
4. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark
This series follows writer Michelle McNamara’s search for the Golden State Killer and gives attention to survivors. It suits viewers who want an investigation shaped by both research and the experiences of people harmed by the crimes. Hulu’s October 31, 2025 guide says the title requires the Disney+, Hulu, Max bundle or a Max add-on; check the current listing.
5. Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke
A Hulu Original, this documentary draws on accounts from family members to examine what happened away from Ruby Franke’s social-media image. Hulu’s guide dated October 31, 2025 reported that Franke had 2.3 million followers; that figure is Hulu’s description, not an independently verified count here. For a case involving abuse and family testimony, distinguish what interviewees recount from the documentary’s framing.
6. Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg?
This Hulu Original revisits Ellen Greenberg’s death and her family’s search for answers. The case is contested, so read the documentary as an account of the family’s perspective and the questions it raises, not as proof that disputed details have been settled.

7. The Idaho College Murders
This documentary retraces the investigation into the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students. It is the most direct fit for viewers looking for an investigation-led account of a recent case. A film’s scope is limited, however: do not assume it resolves questions beyond what it documents.
8. Captive Audience: A Real American Horror Story
This series follows the Stayner brothers, including a disappearance and return, and examines the effects of intense media attention. It broadens the usual focus on a single crime by considering how public storytelling can shape the people at the center of a case.
Rank #4
9. Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence
This series examines Larry Ray’s manipulation and trafficking of Sarah Lawrence students, with survivors contributing to the account. It is a strong choice for viewers interested in coercion and abuse within a close-knit community rather than a conventional murder investigation.
10. The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley
This documentary examines Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos as a story of fraud, corporate claims and accountability. It is a useful alternative to murder-centered true crime: the stakes arise from deception and institutional trust, not a homicide investigation.

How to choose what to watch
- For a sustained investigation: Try the multi-part formats such as The Jinx or I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.
- For a family or survivor-centered account: Consider Devil in the Family, Death in Apartment 603 or Stolen Youth.
- For fraud and public claims: Scamanda and The Inventor focus on deception and its consequences.
- For scandal beyond a typical crime case: Captive Audience widens the lens to media attention and its effects.
- For a case with disputed interpretations: The Staircase and Death in Apartment 603 warrant particular care in separating a film’s perspective from settled fact.
Check Hulu access before you press play
Hulu’s guide is dated October 31, 2025, and its “streaming now” framing does not guarantee current availability. The Jinx and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark were marked as requiring the Disney+, Hulu, Max bundle or a Max add-on in that guide. This does not establish the access tier for the other titles, nor guarantee today’s packaging for those two. Availability may vary by region, and plan terms can change; consult each Hulu title page for the current listing and access requirements.
Watch true-crime documentaries with a critical eye
Documentaries select interviews, evidence and context to make an argument or tell a story. In cases involving allegations, convictions, disputed conclusions or family testimony, notice who is speaking, what is established in the film and what remains contested. A compelling edit is not, by itself, proof that every conclusion is settled.
