The BBC marked its centenary in 2022, but the best programme to watch on iPlayer depends on your mood: try Blue Lights for Belfast-set crime, Ludwig for a lighter puzzle, or The Night Manager for espionage. These are recommendations from UK availability checks dated 19 July 2026, not confirmation that every title is still on iPlayer today. Search the service before settling in.
What the BBC’s “100 years” means
The anniversary refers to 2022, not the present day. The British Broadcasting Company was formed on 18 October 1922; its first daily transmissions from London station 2LO began on 14 November that year, according to the BBC’s 1920s key dates. The BBC marked the centenary with BBC 100 programming, commissions and events, including The Love Box in Your Living Room and David Dimbleby’s BBC: A Very British History (BBC, 2022).

For a documentary-minded viewer, the anniversary is a useful reminder of the breadth of the BBC’s output, not a reason to treat any one programme as objectively “best.” The recommendations below are organized by genre, tone and viewing commitment.
Which BBC iPlayer show should you choose?
A UK guide checked the following six programmes on iPlayer on 19 July 2026. That dated check is a starting point, not a guarantee of availability on 5 October 2026; the catalogue can change.

More drama to look for
A TV Guide drama round-up updated on 27 May 2026 also included A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and Half Man (TV Guide’s BBC drama list). At that time, Half Man was described as a six-episode 2026 series airing weekly. That release detail is historical; it does not establish its current status or iPlayer availability.
How to confirm a programme is still available
- Open BBC iPlayer and search for the programme title. BBC Help lists search as one way to find programmes.
- Check the programme page for its current availability and any displayed expiry information before you begin.
- If it is not listed, browse the homepage’s featured and popular programmes, personalised recommendations, iPlayer Channels, or categories such as comedy, box sets and documentaries. These discovery routes are described in BBC iPlayer Help.
Older recommendations may no longer be relevant. For example, the article that supplied the original “100 years” framing was first published on 18 October 2022 and updated on 25 March 2024; it discussed OJ: Made in America as a seven-and-a-half-hour documentary in roughly 90-minute parts. That is historical viewing detail, not confirmation that the documentary is currently on iPlayer (Stuff’s article).
Where BBC iPlayer is available
BBC Studios says BBC iPlayer television programmes can be streamed or downloaded only while inside the UK because of rights agreements (BBC Studios). BBC Help also says iPlayer is available only in the UK and access is tied to a valid UK TV licence (BBC iPlayer Help). These conditions apply to the service; they do not guarantee that a particular title will be in the catalogue.

The BBC’s documentary reach
BBC Studios’ annual reporting offers a sense of the reach of its factual programming, though these are the company’s audience claims rather than independent ratings analysis. Its 2025 annual report says Asia was the most-watched documentary among UK audiences in 2024; its 2024/25 annual report reports that Mammals reached 13 million in the UK alone in 2024 (BBC Studios annual reports). These figures do not establish whether either programme is currently available on iPlayer.
