Your soul is eternal.” Tagawa, best known to many fans as Shang Tsung in the 1995 live-action Mortal Kombat film, was 75 when his death was reported in December 2025.
What Ed Boon said about Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa
Boon, identified by Mortal Kombat Online and Game Informer as a co-creator of the game series, began his tribute: “We lost a legend today.” He went on to write:
“Cary was one of a kind. He combined danger, swagger and athleticism to his roles and will always be remembered as the man who first brought Shang Tsung to life on film. Rest in Peace. Your soul is eternal.”
The wording “Your soul is eternal” is Boon’s tribute to Tagawa; it is not a statement attributed to Tagawa or his family.

Tagawa worked across film, television and games, but Boon’s tribute focused on the qualities he brought to Shang Tsung: danger, swagger and athleticism. The character’s place in the 1995 film—and Tagawa’s later connection to the games—made the role a natural center for a remembrance from one of the franchise’s creators.
