Walt Disney World announced that its theme parks and Disney Springs were scheduled to reopen Friday, October 11, 2024, after closing for Hurricane Milton. The announcement did not mean every resort area or attraction would be operating normally: some locations remained closed, and contemporaneous reporting cautioned that the parks might not be fully functioning.
When Disney World closed and reopened after Hurricane Milton
- Wednesday, October 9, 2024: Disney’s theme parks and Disney Springs closed as Milton approached. The Associated Press reported that Orlando’s major theme park operators were closed for at least part of Wednesday. AP’s October 10 account described the closure period.
- Thursday, October 10: The parks and Disney Springs remained closed while Disney assessed impacts and prepared to reopen. Thursday’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party was canceled.
- Friday, October 11: Disney scheduled the theme parks and Disney Springs to reopen. The announcement also referred to “possibly other areas,” rather than confirming that every part of the resort would reopen. WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando reported the announcement.
What the Friday reopening did—and did not—cover
The scheduled reopening applied to the theme parks and Disney Springs. It was not a guarantee that all attractions, events, resort facilities, or other guest operations would be available. The Associated Press reported that the parks might not be fully functioning Friday and that some Halloween special events would not be offered. AP’s October 10 report did not provide a complete reopening-day attraction list.
Locations had separate statuses. In its October 11 follow-up, ClickOrlando reported that Fort Wilderness and Saratoga Springs Treehouse Villas were temporarily closed; Typhoon Lagoon and miniature golf locations were closed through Thursday, with no reopening date announced in that report. Blizzard Beach was closed for planned refurbishment. These were location-specific updates, not evidence that all resort operations shared one reopening schedule. What Disney said about storm impacts
ClickOrlando quoted a statement from Disney’s website: “We’re grateful Walt Disney World Resort weathered the storm, and we are currently assessing the impacts to our property to prepare for reopening.” The statement described an assessment in progress; it did not provide a damage total or confirm that every attraction would be ready when the parks opened. The quoted statement appeared in ClickOrlando’s October 10 report.

Canceled event tickets and other guest changes
Disney canceled the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party scheduled for Thursday, October 10. ClickOrlando reported that tickets for that event would be refunded. For the same 2024 storm response, it reported that partially used multi-day tickets would have their expiration adjusted to October 11, 2025, and that prepaid bookable experiences would be automatically refunded within seven to ten business days. Disney also said it would not enforce cancellation policies for dining and other experiences until further notice. These measures were reported by ClickOrlando on October 10, 2024; they describe that emergency response, not a current or standing policy.

For a guest deciding what the announcement meant, three questions were distinct: whether a core park was scheduled to open, whether a particular location or amenity had its own closure, and whether an event ticket or prepaid experience qualified for a remedy. The scheduled Friday opening answered only the first question; the location updates and cancellation report addressed the others.

The Associated Press cited 74 million tourists in Orlando in the prior year to illustrate the area’s importance as a visitor destination. That figure was AP’s contextual tourism figure, not Disney park attendance. AP’s October 10 story did not identify the original publisher of the tourism data.
