Each hint points toward a category without listing its four entries.
- Yellow: Think money used in different countries.
- Green: Look for ways to express “and” or “together with.”
- Blue: Consider the shapes used for mouths in text emoticons.
- Purple: These items can all indicate “right.”

Why the puzzle was tricky
The board invites visual groupings that are not the answer. N, O, P, and R look like a possible letter set, while X, ), (, and + suggest a mathematics-themed cluster. The intended groups instead depend on meanings and uses that cross those apparent patterns: currency, conjunction, emoticon mouths, and “right.”

Tom’s Guide’s December 29, 2025 retrospective reported a 4.6-out-of-5 difficulty rating and a 29% solve rate for #660, attributing both to NYT Connections Companion data. It also reported that 51% of solvers made the N/O/P/R grouping mistake and 37% tried X, ), (, and +, attributing those figures to NYT Connections Bot data. These are secondary-reported figures, not independently presented raw statistics.

Connections presents 16 items to sort into four groups of four. Its color tiers run from yellow, the easiest, to purple, the trickiest; overlapping possibilities are part of the challenge. The NYT Help Center says the daily puzzle releases at midnight in the player’s timezone and is available on the NYT Games site, in the Games app, and through the News app; it also lists nytimes.com/theathletic as an access location.

The NYT archive reaches back to June 12, 2023 and is available to All Access and Games subscribers. Archived play can contribute to some game statistics, but not to current or maximum streaks, and a completed archive puzzle cannot be replayed. Connections Bot provides personalized difficulty, category, mistake, and guess-by-guess information; the Help Center lists access for All Access, Home Delivery, and Games subscribers.
