What happened to the Aurora?
Willson’s restoration effort did not end with the sinking: he had sold the ship months earlier. The vessel was refloated during the response to the May 2024 incident, and contractors removed contaminated water, hazardous waste and debris. Later reporting says it was towed to Mare Island and its demolition was complete by April 9, 2025, except for final disposal of a few remaining items. That account appeared in secondary reporting and is not independently confirmed here through an official source.
From Wappen von Hamburg to Aurora
Built by Blohm and Voss in 1955, the ship was originally named Wappen von Hamburg. A 2024 CNN report republished by KSL describes it as a significant postwar German passenger liner.
Willson, an entrepreneur from Utah, found the ship listed on Craigslist and bought it in 2008. After moving it to Rio Vista, California, he renamed it Aurora. It spent time at San Francisco’s Pier 38 before returning to the Delta in 2012, where it was moored at Herman & Helen’s Marina in Little Potato Slough. The marina later closed, but the ship remained there.

What Willson restored—and what he hoped to do
Willson and his partner, Jin Li, lived aboard while he and volunteers worked on the vessel. The work included the pool, forward decks and steel plating. Willson said ten areas had been restored and refurnished. His longer-term goal was to turn the ship into a museum.
The scale of the project is clear from the time and money involved, but the cost figure is an estimate, not an audited restoration budget. KSL’s CNN report says Willson put his spending on maintenance and moving the project forward at well over $1 million while acknowledging that he did not know the exact amount. The same report says he described moving the ship as potentially requiring a million dollars’ worth of dredging; that was his estimate of a possible cost, not a confirmed contractor quote.

The sinking and pollution response
Willson sold the Aurora in October 2023. About seven months later, on May 22, 2024, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said the ship had suffered a hole, was taking on water and was leaking diesel fuel and oil into the Delta Waterway. The cause of the hole has not been established in the cited reporting, and the material does not establish who owned the vessel at the time.
A report by FOX 13, carrying the same CNN reporting rather than an independent investigation, quoted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response on the cleanup. Contractors refloated the vessel and removed an estimated 21,675 gallons of oily water, 3,193 gallons of hazardous waste and five 25-yard bins of debris. The agency said no oiled wildlife was observed during the response.

What the story does—and does not—establish
The documented arc is one of a long restoration ambition followed by a sinking after the owner’s sale: a historic liner was acquired, worked on for years with volunteer help and intended for museum use, then required a pollution response and, according to later secondary reporting, was demolished. The available reporting does not establish why the hull failed or assign responsibility for the sinking. It also does not turn Willson’s estimate into a precise accounting of what the restoration cost.
