Bob and Ginnie Newhart were married for 60 years, from January 12, 1963, until Ginnie’s death on April 23, 2023. They traced their story to a blind date arranged by comedian Buddy Hackett, built a family of four children and 10 grandchildren, and described humor as one way they weathered tense moments. Ginnie also proposed the dream-reveal ending that linked Newhart to Bob’s earlier sitcom—an idea whose authorship has more than one account.

How did Bob Newhart meet Ginnie?

Buddy Hackett introduced them on a blind date at his home in the early 1960s. Ginnie, who had babysat Hackett’s children, recalled that he told her he had met a comic named Bobby Newhart and thought she should marry him. Bob also credited Hackett with arranging the date in his PBS American Masters interview.

Ginnie remembered the date taking place at Buddy and Cherie Hackett’s house with another couple. They played pool and sang “Bridge on the River Kwai” as they moved around the table. In her PBS interview, recorded in 2005, she placed the meeting around 1961 or 1962; a 2023 Los Angeles Times obituary gives the year as 1962.

How long were Bob and Ginnie Newhart married?

They married on January 12, 1963, a date Ginnie gave in her PBS interview. She described Bob’s proposal in his understated style: he asked whether she could travel to St. Louis in winter if she had a ring on her finger. She understood what he meant.

Their marriage lasted 60 years. They marked the anniversary in January 2023; Ginnie died on April 23 of that year, aged 82, after a long illness, according to the Los Angeles Times. The family statement quoted in the obituary remembered her as “our rock” and said, “we miss her terribly.”

The family they built

Bob and Ginnie had four children: Rob, Tim, Jennifer, and Courtney, and 10 grandchildren, the Los Angeles Times reported. Ginnie recalled that Bob was frightened by the responsibilities of marriage and impending parenthood, and that money was tight in their early years. Those details come from her personal account rather than a separate financial or family record.

Bob later named family as the accomplishment that mattered most to him. “I’m most proud of the longevity of my marriage, my kids, and my grandchildren,” he told PBS.

What did they say helped their marriage?

Both Newharts connected humor with getting through difficult moments, but they spoke about their own experience, not a universal recipe for a lasting marriage. Bob told PBS that laughter helped couples through rough patches. In a 2022 interview with Parade, reported by the Los Angeles Times, he described how even an intense argument could ease if one person found a line that made both laugh.

Ginnie offered her own affectionate observation in the PBS interview: “Comedians are just fun to be with. They seem to have longevity in their marriages.” Their comments suggest how they understood laughter in their relationship; they do not establish humor as the sole reason their marriage lasted.

Was the Newhart finale Ginnie’s idea?

Ginnie said she suggested the dream ending after seeing Suzanne Pleshette at a Christmas party. In her account, she imagined Bob’s Vermont innkeeper waking in bed beside Pleshette’s Emily Hartley, revealing that the events of Newhart had been a dream. Bob encouraged her to tell Pleshette, who responded enthusiastically. Pleshette later recalled Ginnie saying: “In the last episode, Bob should wake up in bed with you, and Newhart would all be a dream. It would be fabulous.”

Bob later credited Ginnie with the suggestion, including in his memoir, I Shouldn’t Even Be Doing This! And Other Things that Strike Me as Funny, as noted by the Television Academy. The finale ultimately brought Bob’s Vermont innkeeper together with Dr. Bob Hartley from The Bob Newhart Show: he wakes beside Emily, and the Vermont story is revealed as a dream.

There is a competing account of the idea’s origin. The Television Academy’s history of the finale reports that executive producers Mark Egan, Mark Solomon, and Bob Bendetson credited writer Dan O’Shannon with suggesting the concept the previous year. The accounts can be presented without treating one as definitively disproven: Ginnie described proposing it to Bob and Pleshette, Bob credited her, and the producers also attributed the concept to O’Shannon.
