Where to find free books for Kindle
Borrow ebooks from your public library with Libby
Libby is a free app for borrowing ebooks, audiobooks and magazines from participating public libraries. You will need a library card or other eligible library access, and the books you can borrow depend on your library’s catalog and availability. Loans are time-limited rather than permanent downloads.
Libby says most of its books can be read on a Kindle e-reader in the United States. To send an eligible loan to Kindle, open Shelf → Loans → Read With → Kindle, then complete Amazon’s handoff by selecting Get Library Book. The book is delivered to Kindle devices associated with the Amazon account you use. Kindle delivery is not described as universal outside the United States, so check your library’s instructions and available formats if you are elsewhere. Libby’s Kindle instructions explain the process and eligibility.
Download public-domain books from Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg offers more than 75,000 free ebooks, primarily works whose copyright has expired in the United States. You can read books in a browser or download files to read elsewhere. Its guidance for Kindle readers is to download the EPUB3 file and upload it through the Send to Kindle page for your Amazon marketplace. Project Gutenberg’s Kindle download instructions distinguish newer and older Kindle devices; follow the current instructions for your device instead of assuming every format works the same way.

The books are downloads rather than library loans, but copyright status can differ by country. Check local rules before downloading or sharing a title outside the United States.
Browse the Kindle Store and your Kindle library
Amazon describes browsing the Kindle Store on a Kindle device and downloading books to your Kindle library. Free listings and promotional prices can change, and not every listing labeled free is a permanent no-cost offer. Check the price and terms in your own Amazon marketplace before selecting a book. The available guidance here does not establish a current, universal filter for zero-price Kindle Store books.

Do not confuse a free listing with a library loan, a temporary promotion or a subscription catalog. Kindle Unlimited, for example, is a subscription service, not a requirement for reading Kindle books or a source of permanently free downloads.

Read Kindle books without buying a Kindle e-reader
Amazon provides Kindle reading apps for phones, tablets and computers, so a dedicated e-reader is optional.
