Glaser said her remark about Swift’s body reflected jealousy and projection; Swift replied publicly with thanks and empathy. The exchange followed the film’s release on January 31, 2020.
What did Nikki Glaser say about Taylor Swift?
The clip in Miss Americana showed Glaser commenting that Swift was “too skinny” and referring to Swift’s model friends. The remark came from an interview recorded about five years before the documentary. Its inclusion brought the old comment back into view when the film premiered.

Teen Vogue’s contemporaneous report describes the clip and quotes the exchange that followed; Glamour also reported on the apology.
Why did Glaser apologize?
After watching the documentary, Glaser posted an apology on Instagram. She called the remark an example of “projection” and said it came from jealousy. Glaser connected that feeling to her own reported struggles and expressed regret for adding to Swift’s pain. That explanation is Glaser’s account of her motive, not an independently established diagnosis.

- Taylor Swift's 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be released worldwide October 3, 2025
In a later interview revisiting the episode, Glaser said hearing her own voice in the film was painful: “That was one of the worst feelings ever, was hearing my voice being catty about her because I just knew it was my voice.” Elle reported the recollection on August 14, 2025, based on an interview with Graham Bensinger conducted in May 2024.
How did Taylor Swift respond?
Swift replied publicly to Glaser’s Instagram post. As quoted by Teen Vogue, she thanked Glaser and said one of the documentary’s major themes was that people can change their opinions over time, grow, and learn about themselves. Swift also expressed empathy about the struggles they shared.

That response is why contemporaneous coverage characterized the exchange as Swift accepting Glaser’s apology. More precisely, Swift’s public reply thanked her and emphasized growth and empathy; readers can assess the wording for themselves.

- January 31, 2020: Miss Americana was released on Netflix, according to Elle’s retrospective account.
- February 1, 2020: Teen Vogue and Glamour reported Glaser’s Instagram apology and Swift’s response.
- May 2024: Glaser revisited the experience in an interview with Graham Bensinger; Elle reported on that interview in August 2025.
Glaser’s later enthusiasm for Swift is documented separately: Vogue reported in August 2024 that she had attended 17 Eras Tour shows by the time of its interview and expected to reach 22 by the tour’s end (Vogue). In 2025, the Recording Academy reported that she attended 22 shows in 2024 (GRAMMY.com). That later fandom is context, not part of the 2020 apology exchange.
