Prince William called 2024 “probably the hardest year in my life” and described it as “brutal” from a personal family perspective. He made the remarks to reporters on November 7, 2024, at the end of a four-day visit to South Africa, after his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and his father, King Charles III, had both been diagnosed with cancer that year.
What did Prince William say?
Speaking to reporters as his South Africa trip ended, William reflected on the strain of managing his public responsibilities while his family faced serious health news. The Associated Press quoted him saying, “Honestly, it’s been dreadful.” He added: “So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult. But I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”

William also spoke about carrying on with work and protecting time for family: “It’s more a case of just crack on and you’ve got to keep going,” he said. “I enjoy my work, and I enjoy pacing myself and keeping sure that I have got time for my family, too.” The Guardian independently reported his description of 2024 as “probably been the hardest year in my life.” (Associated Press; The Guardian)
Why did he describe the year as brutal?
Both Catherine and King Charles were diagnosed with cancer in 2024. Buckingham Palace announced Charles’s diagnosis in February, following a hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement. Catherine announced her diagnosis in March, after abdominal surgery and subsequent tests. The contemporary reports cited here did not disclose either person’s cancer type.

In September 2024, Catherine said she had completed chemotherapy and called the experience “incredibly tough for us as a family.” That was a statement about her treatment at that time, not a current medical update. William’s November comments focused on the family impact and on balancing other responsibilities; they were not a medical briefing. (Associated Press; ITV News)
When and where did William make the remarks?
William spoke on November 7, 2024, at the close of a four-day visit to South Africa. The trip included the Earthshot Prize ceremony in Cape Town. Reports were published on November 7 and 8, but the interview took place on November 7. (The Guardian; ITV News; ABC News Australia)

What “breaks silence” means in this context
Some headlines framed the interview as William “breaking silence.” That should not be read as saying he had never spoken about the diagnoses. The narrower point in contemporary coverage was that this was the first time he had discussed his own feelings about the difficult year in detail. (Associated Press; ITV News)

William’s words explain how he described the family strain and his effort to keep work and family life in balance. They do not establish the cancer types, prognoses, treatment details beyond the reported 2024 updates, or the family’s present-day health. The remarks are a personal reflection on that year, not a clinical account.
