Santa Claus was not invented by Coca-Cola, Clement Clarke Moore or any single figure. The character familiar today took shape over centuries, blending traditions associated with Saint Nicholas, Dutch Sinterklaas, American writing and illustration, and later commercial imagery. The surviving record is much clearer about how those traditions developed than about the life of the historical Nicholas.

What was Santa Claus initially based on?

The oldest layer is the tradition of Saint Nicholas, a Christian figure associated with generosity and a December 6 feast day. Later traditions linked Nicholas with Sinterklaas, the Dutch name and gift-bringing custom that helped shape American stories of Santa. The Massachusetts Commonwealth Museum describes this connection, but the name’s precise linguistic path is not settled: accounts differ over Dutch and Swiss-German influences.

The person behind the Saint Nicholas tradition is harder to pin down than the tradition itself. In a 2017 TIME report, historian Judith Flanders said reliable historical documents do not prove that the person existed. That is an attributed scholarly interpretation, not a consensus claim that erases the well-documented history of beliefs and customs that grew around Nicholas.

How did Santa become the figure we know today?

Before the poem: a Dutch-American tradition

Washington Irving’s 1809 A History of New York helped popularize a Dutch past for St. Nicholas in New York. But Irving did not coin the name Santa Claus: TIME reports newspaper references to the name in the 1770s, before Irving’s birth in 1783. His contribution was literary and cultural, not the invention of the name.

1823: an influential poem, published anonymously

“A Visit from St. Nicholas,” now commonly called “The Night Before Christmas,” appeared anonymously in the Troy Sentinel on December 23, 1823. The Library of Congress account by Neely Tucker states: “The poem was first published anonymously in the Troy (New York) Sentinel newspaper on Dec. 23, 1823.”

The poem gave American readers a vivid gift-bringer: a little, round, bearded figure in fur, carrying toys in a sleigh drawn by eight reindeer. It calls him a “jolly old elf,” but it does not specify a red suit. The poem shaped the American Santa, drawing on older Christmas and Saint Nicholas traditions rather than creating the character from nothing.

Who wrote “The Night Before Christmas”?

Clement Clarke Moore was credited as the poem’s author in 1837 and claimed authorship in 1844, according to the Museum of the City of New York. Descendants of Henry Livingston Jr. later proposed Livingston as the author. The museum takes no position, and the attribution remains disputed; publication, later credit and competing authorship claims are different kinds of evidence, not a settled verdict.

1860s onward: illustrations build the familiar image

Thomas Nast’s Christmas illustrations helped give Santa a more recognizable visual form, including a red coat, workshop and North Pole setting. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates its record for Nast’s “Christmas Eve” to January 3, 1863, describing an image made for the 1862 Christmas issue of Harper’s Weekly. It combines St. Nicholas and German elf traditions and shows Santa visiting soldiers during the Civil War, when many were separated from home.

The Library of Congress traces familiar motifs such as the red coat and North Pole to Nast’s vignettes, and identifies his 1881 “Merry Old Santa Claus” as an iconic later image. The holiday context was still changing, too: Christmas did not become a U.S. federal holiday until 1870. The Library of Congress connects that designation to efforts at post-Civil War national unity.

Commercial images and Coca-Cola

Commercial Santa imagery was appearing by the mid-19th century. Smithsonian Magazine describes Coca-Cola’s early-1930s advertising as building on a familiar image and helping cement it in popular culture. The company did not invent Santa or his red suit: Nast’s 19th-century depictions already included a red coat. Coca-Cola’s role was influence and popularization, not creation.

What people get wrong about Santa Claus

  • “Coca-Cola created Santa’s red suit.” The red coat appears in Nast’s 19th-century Santa imagery; Coca-Cola’s later advertising helped standardize a familiar depiction.
  • “Moore invented Santa Claus.” The poem was influential in the American tradition, but it adapted existing customs, and its authorship is disputed.
  • “The poem describes Santa exactly as we picture him now.” Its fur-clad, pipe-smoking, toy-carrying figure is not specified as wearing red; later artists added to the visual tradition.
  • “Nast’s first Santa image was just a holiday cartoon.” The Met places “Christmas Eve” in the Civil War, showing Santa visiting soldiers far from home.
  • “Washington Irving coined the name Santa Claus.” Reported newspaper uses of the name predate Irving; his writing helped popularize a Dutch-American St. Nicholas story.

How to judge claims about Santa’s origins

Origin stories often blur distinct questions: whether a historical Nicholas existed, how folk customs developed, what shaped the American literary Santa, and when the modern commercial image became familiar. Keep those layers separate when weighing claims.

  • Identify the claim. A contemporary newspaper reference, a later recollection, a folk tradition and a modern historian’s interpretation do not establish the same thing.
  • Check the dates. Evidence recorded long after an alleged event is not the same as a document from the period.
  • Distinguish influence from invention. A writer, artist or advertiser can popularize an existing motif without originating the whole character.
  • Keep uncertainty visible. The Saint Nicholas biography and the poem’s authorship remain less certain than the dated record of the poem’s publication and Nast’s print.

The Library of Congress’s Neely Tucker sums up the layered history this way: “Santa, as we know him today, did not exist.” It is an editorial observation about a character assembled over time, not a claim that Santa traditions have no history.
