The Last Showgirl is a character drama about what happens when the job that has defined a person’s life suddenly disappears. Pamela Anderson gives the film its dramatic center as Shelly, a veteran Las Vegas showgirl facing the closure of her revue and a strained relationship with her daughter. The result is most compelling as a portrait of work, identity and aging; viewers looking for a tightly plotted Vegas story may find its approach less satisfying.

Is Pamela Anderson good in The Last Showgirl?

Yes. Anderson is the film’s central strength, playing Shelly with an earnestness that keeps the character from becoming a punchline or a glamorous Vegas cliché. Shelly’s confidence as a performer does not spare her from the uncertainty of life outside the show, and Anderson makes that gap the heart of the role.

The part also invites audiences to bring their knowledge of Anderson’s public life to the screen. But Shelly is a fictional character, not a stand-in for Anderson. TIME reports that Anderson said at a Toronto International Film Festival Q&A, “I think I’ve been getting ready my whole life for this role,” and joked of the script, “It’s the first time I ever read a good script, first of all.” The performance’s force comes from how she inhabits Shelly, rather than from treating the two women as interchangeable.

What is The Last Showgirl about?

Directed by Gia Coppola and written by Kate Gersten, this 2024 US drama follows Shelly after the revue where she has performed for 30 years announces it is closing. She must work out what comes next while trying to repair her relationship with her daughter, who often took a back seat to Shelly’s showgirl family.

The film is interested in more than a career change. For Shelly, the show is a community and a source of identity, built around a production whose former grandeur she still holds onto. Gersten told TIME that she drew on observing Jubilee! showgirls after taking a job writing patter for the show that would take over some of Jubilee!’s performances. Her imagined Shelly is a longtime performer and den mother to younger dancers, a perspective that helps make the revue’s closure feel like the loss of a working world, not just a spectacle.

Does the story make its work and family themes land?

The strongest idea is the collision between a public role Shelly knows how to perform and a private life she has not put first. The daughter relationship gives the coming job loss an intimate consequence: Shelly is not only facing an uncertain future but also confronting the cost of the choices that brought her here.

Coppola’s film takes a tender view of a corner of Las Vegas that audiences might dismiss as crass or cheesy. It favors sympathy for the labor and people behind the revue over campy mockery. That choice gives the setting emotional weight, though the film’s interest in atmosphere and character can come at the expense of narrative momentum. The critical discussion reflects that tension: Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus praises Anderson’s dramatic showcase and the ensemble, while its audience summary notes criticism of the storytelling. Those are platform summaries, not a guarantee that every viewer will respond the same way.

Who else is in the cast?

Anderson is supported by an ensemble that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Dave Bautista, Kiernan Shipka, Brenda Song and Billie Lourd. The film also features characters named Jodie, Mary-Anne, Hannah, Eddie and Annette. Their presence widens the view beyond Shelly, toward the people connected to the show and the lives unfolding around it.

Is The Last Showgirl worth watching?

It is a good choice for viewers drawn to performance-led character studies about aging, work and the identities built around a long career. Anderson’s dramatic turn is the clear reason to watch, and the film’s sympathy for a fading revue gives its Vegas setting more human texture than spectacle alone would provide. If plot construction and steady momentum matter more to you than mood and performance, the film’s softer storytelling may be a drawback.
