These 39 short and funny wedding toasts are original suggestions you can adapt with the couple’s names or a true, kind detail. A toast can be just a few lines: keep the joke affectionate, the congratulations clear, and the ending easy for guests to follow.
How to make a funny wedding toast land
A funny wedding toast works best when the humor shows affection rather than putting anyone on the spot. Emily Post advises preparing remarks, keeping them positive, using clean humor, and avoiding stories that could embarrass the honoree. Toastmasters recommends making the toast personal, identifying your relationship to the couple, and rehearsing it.
- Start with who you are and how you know the couple.
- Use one brief, true observation or gentle joke instead of a long story.
- Finish with a clear wish for their life together and invite everyone to raise a glass.
- Practice aloud. A written copy or cue cards are fine, and a nonalcoholic drink is perfectly suitable for the toast.
Replace bracketed names or details, and use only material you would be comfortable saying in front of the couple, their families, and the whole room. The examples below are original suggestions, not traditional sayings or quotations.

How long should a wedding toast be?
There is no universal timer, so follow the couple’s or event organizer’s requested limit first. Emily Post’s wedding-toast guidance recommends one to two minutes, with three minutes as an upper bound. Toastmasters’ wedding-specific guidance says to keep a wedding toast to no longer than three minutes; its general toast advice recommends two to three minutes. For a short toast, a few well-chosen lines are enough.

Who usually gives the first wedding toast?
Customs vary by event and couple. Emily Post describes the best man as traditionally leading the reception toasts. At a rehearsal dinner, its guidance identifies the host—traditionally the groom’s father—as the first toaster. Parents, the maid or matron of honor, the couple, and other close participants may also speak. The couple’s wishes and the event host’s schedule take precedence over custom.
For a formal toast, stand and wait until guests can hear and attend. Keep a written copy or cue cards handy if they help you stay focused; a sip is enough, and your glass need not contain alcohol. Emily Post sums up the goal simply: “The best toasts are short and come from the heart.” Toastmasters International’s wedding guidance likewise says, “A toast should be original, heartfelt and customized for the occasion.”
