Mortal Kombat II opened in North American theaters on May 8, 2026; its international rollout began May 6. Both dates have passed. The film first moved from October 24, 2025, to May 15, 2026, then advanced one week to May 8. The “good news” was the summer release positioning—not a guarantee of box-office success.
When did Mortal Kombat II come out?
The final North American theatrical date was May 8, 2026. The film’s official site lists the international rollout as beginning May 6, 2026; individual countries may have had different local dates.

That means the movie is not an upcoming release as of October 4, 2026. The official site now promotes it as available on Digital and 4K Ultra HD, including an on-disc option.
How did the release date change?
| Stage | Scheduled date | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Original theatrical plan | October 24, 2025 | TheWrap and GameSpot reported this as the initial date. |
| First change | May 15, 2026 | On August 29, 2025, Warner Bros. and New Line moved the film out of October and into the following May. TheWrap’s report described October as crowded and May as a more favorable release window. |
| Final North American date | May 8, 2026 | In October 2025, the film moved forward one week from May 15. The official site confirms May 8. |
| International rollout | From May 6, 2026 | The official site gives May 6 as the international rollout start; regional calendars can vary. |
The move to May was the major delay. The later adjustment from May 15 to May 8 was a separate, one-week advance—not another delay.

Why was the move to May described as good news?
The scheduling case was that leaving a crowded October corridor could give the film a more favorable launch window in May, when studios often position major releases for the summer movie season. TheWrap reported that Warner Bros. and New Line hoped to reproduce the summer-window success of another franchise release. That was the studio’s rationale, not evidence that changing the date by itself would ensure a stronger result.
Director Simon McQuoid also presented the longer wait positively. In an October 21, 2025, GameSpot report, which relayed his remarks from The Hollywood Reporter, McQuoid said: “Every time people have seen this movie, it’s gained momentum.” He also described it as “a massive summer blockbuster” and said the franchise would “kick off next year.” Those comments explain the optimistic framing: the delay was presented as time to build anticipation for a larger summer launch.

So “good news” is best understood as a scheduling and promotional argument. The first move put the movie into a summer release window; the later move brought the North American date forward by a week. Neither change, on its own, proves that the strategy improved the film’s commercial performance.
