Eastwood later described the change as a painful disagreement, while praising Kaufman’s work on the script.
What decision was Eastwood talking about?
Eastwood took over directing the 1976 western The Outlaw Josey Wales after Kaufman had begun filming. In a recollection reproduced by Men’s Journal, Eastwood said Kaufman had shot for a week before Eastwood took over and reshot material.
Why did Eastwood take over?
Eastwood described a difference in how he saw the film developing, rather than dismissing Kaufman’s writing. He said Kaufman had done “marvelous work on the script,” but that once production was underway, Eastwood began to visualize the movie differently. Eastwood also characterized the project as larger, less documentary, and more episodic, and said that presented a challenge for Kaufman.
His explanation is a retrospective account attributed to him by Men’s Journal. The accessible article does not independently establish every cause of the personnel change, so the disagreement should not be treated as a fully documented production history.

What did Eastwood mean by “the worst moment of my life”?
Eastwood was describing how much he hated taking over and re-shooting material, not saying he regretted the film itself. Men’s Journal reproduces his words: “I hated it; it was the worst moment of my life. I’ve never fired anybody. It was just a disagreement…” He also said, “Then, as I got into it, I began to visualize it differently.”
The quotation is attributed to Clint Eastwood: Interviews, edited by Robert E. Kapsis and Kathie Coblentz, as identified by Men’s Journal. The accessible reporting does not name the interviewer or establish the interview date and full original context; these are quotations as reproduced in that article, not independently checked against the book’s original pages.
