Showrunner Alexi Hawley has tied that pattern to the trauma of Bailey’s marriage to Jason; in season 8, a job in Washington, D.C., puts real strain on her marriage to Nolan. The story is confronting the cost of Bailey’s choices, though the available episode and interview information does not show that the pattern is permanently resolved.
What is Bailey’s “fatal character flaw”?
It is not an official diagnosis or a label established by the series. It is a shorthand for a recurring behavior that Hawley has described as Bailey’s need to move, reinvent herself and keep taking on challenges. He said that tendency had been part of her story “since the beginning” and connected it to the trauma of her marriage to Jason and its effects on her relationship with Nolan. Hawley’s explanation in TV Insider makes the motivation more complicated than simple restlessness: a pattern shaped by a painful past can still hurt the person Bailey loves.

Why does Bailey take the job in Washington?
In season 8, Bailey accepts a Pentagon-related job in Washington, D.C., while Nolan remains in Los Angeles rather than uprooting his life and career. The couple tries to make a long-distance marriage work. That decision turns Bailey’s desire for another challenge into a direct test of the relationship: Nolan has been supportive, but the arrangement means both partners must live with the consequences of the move. TV Insider’s account of Hawley’s comments describes the separation and the tension behind it.
The choice also matters because Hawley said he wanted Nolan to stop simply accommodating Bailey and to put his foot down, while ultimately supporting her happiness. That framing gives the conflict two sides: Nolan can object to the cost of the move without being cast as opposing Bailey’s independence.

How does the job expose the problem?
Bailey’s new role does not match the challenge she appears to have expected. Jenna Dewan said the work involves a lot of routine office duties and that Bailey comes to realize the position may not be what she wanted after putting her relationship with John on the line to take it. Dewan’s TV Insider interview supplies the clearest explanation of that realization.
That mismatch is the point at which the arc starts to address Bailey’s pattern rather than merely repeat it. The question is no longer only whether she can manage a new role or a long-distance marriage; it is whether pursuing a new challenge has actually brought her closer to what she wants.

What Jason’s history adds to Bailey’s choices
Hawley’s reference to trauma points back to Bailey’s abusive former husband, Jason. In a 2025 interview, Dewan discussed Bailey’s morally complicated decision to contact a hitman targeting Jason and the lingering effects of living under a continuing physical threat. She said, “If you look at just the facts, it’s complicated,” and described living with “a certain PTSD.” Those are Dewan’s interpretations of a fictional character, not a clinical assessment of Bailey. TheWrap interview with Dewan provides that earlier context.

Not on the evidence described in these interviews. Dewan’s comments point to Bailey recognizing that the D.C. job is not what she wanted, while Hawley’s comments frame the move as a source of strain and a turning point for Nolan’s response. That is a confrontation with the pattern and its consequences, not proof of lasting change. Bailey is also in danger in D.C. after helping Grey investigate a Pentagon connection, according to Dewan’s interview; that is immediate plot peril, not evidence that her underlying behavior has been resolved.

ABC’s season 8 episode listing and ABC Press episode information identify “The Thinker” as an episode in which Bailey gets a new role. The official listings confirm the setup; they do not establish a final outcome for the marriage or Bailey’s pattern. For now, the significant shift is that the story makes the personal cost visible—and gives Bailey reason to question whether the next reinvention is truly hers to want.
