The Down clues mix shorthand and wordplay. CAVS is informal shorthand for Cleveland’s Cavaliers; ACRES fits farmers’ lots; and RHONE names a French wine region. “Loose lips” provides the sound-alike phrase behind LOOSE, while an anomaly interpreted as a sign can be an OMEN.
