Five The West Wing cast members reunited onstage at the 76th Emmy Awards on September 15, 2024, to mark the show’s 25th anniversary. They presented Outstanding Drama Series, which went to Shōgun, and used the moment to urge viewers to participate in the 2024 presidential election.

The reunion took place during the 76th Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. In a makeshift Oval Office setting, the five actors presented the Outstanding Drama Series award. ABC and the Television Academy announced the presenters on September 9, 2024; Shōgun won the category.

The occasion marked 25 years since The West Wing premiered on September 22, 1999. The short exchange also connected the show’s imagined political crises with the contemporary news cycle. TIME reported that Allison Janney and Richard Schiff observed that storylines once requiring writers’ imaginations could now be drawn from the news. Janel Moloney encouraged viewers to register and vote, according to TVLine. These are reported remarks, not verified verbatim quotations.
Which cast members took part?
- Martin Sheen — President Josiah Bartlet
- Allison Janney — C.J. Cregg
- Dulé Hill — Charlie Young
- Janel Moloney — Donna Moss
- Richard Schiff — Toby Ziegler
These five appeared in the Emmy segment. The appearance was not a full-ensemble reunion: Rob Lowe and Bradley Whitford were discussed in coverage of the broader anniversary context, but were not among the five participants in the onstage segment.

Why was the anniversary marked at the ceremony?
The West Wing debuted on September 22, 1999, making 2024 its 25th anniversary year. The Emmys appearance joined that milestone to the series’ political subject matter through its election participation appeal.
The Emmy reunion was one part of a wider anniversary year. The Paley Center for Media held Inside The West Wing: A 25th Anniversary Salute at The Paley Museum from July 5 through September 8, 2024. The exhibition’s announced run ended before the Emmy ceremony.
Was this the same as the White House reunion?
No. The Emmy appearance on September 15 was separate from a White House Rose Garden anniversary event on September 20, 2024. At the latter gathering, Sheen spoke about finding something that could unite people and help lift up the nation. The Associated Press reported his words from that event; they should not be attributed to the Emmy segment.

The West Wing won Outstanding Drama Series four consecutive times, from 2000 through 2003, according to the Television Academy’s awards record. Emmy totals differ depending on what is counted: the Academy’s current awards page displays 26 Emmys, while the Paley Center’s June 18, 2024 announcement gives a total of 27 Primetime Emmy Awards, explicitly including one for The West Wing: Documentary Special. Those figures use different scopes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
