Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you’re looking for an alternative to YIFY or YTS, the most dependable choice is an authorized way to watch the specific film you want—not a changing list of torrent domains. The original YIFY/YTS operation reportedly shut down in 2015; later sites using the same name should not be assumed to be official successors. Because movie catalogs and service availability vary by country, the options below are eight access routes, not a universal ranking of eight services.
What happened to YIFY and YTS?
The original YIFY/YTS operation is reported to have closed in 2015. Sites that later used YIFY or YTS branding are not automatically the same operator or an official continuation. An iTechGuides overview provides historical context, but it is secondary reporting: iTechGuides’ YIFY/YTS proxy-site guide.
The domain story is also time-sensitive. TorrentFreak reported that YTS.mx was no longer in use and added in a January 2026 update that YTS had moved to a .BZ domain; it said the reason for the .MX issue was unclear. That report is a dated account, not a recommendation or assurance that a site using the brand is authentic or safe: TorrentFreak’s report on the domain change.
A page describing itself as the official YTS status page lists multiple domains as operational and calls YTS.BZ its current official domain. Those are claims made by the page itself; the listing does not independently establish ownership, safety, or continued operation. For that reason, this article does not reproduce or recommend mirror domains.

Eight legal ways to access movies
These routes solve different problems: some offer free, ad-supported viewing, while others depend on a subscription, a library card, a one-time payment, or a title’s public-domain status. Availability, catalogs, account requirements, devices, and terms differ by region and can change. Check the provider’s local page and the specific film before choosing.
1. Free, ad-supported on-demand streaming
Tubi is described by Digital Citizen as a free, ad-supported on-demand service. It may suit viewers who want to browse a catalog without paying a subscription, but whether it is available where you live—and whether it carries a particular documentary or film—needs to be checked locally. Ads, account requirements, and supported devices may also vary. See Digital Citizen’s overview of legal movie-streaming alternatives and verify current terms with the provider.

2. Free channels plus on-demand movies
Pluto TV is described in the same guide as a combination of live channels and on-demand movies. The distinction matters: a film in the on-demand catalog can generally be selected, while a live channel follows a schedule. Check the local service’s channel lineup and on-demand catalog rather than assuming that a title is available whenever you want to watch it.
3. Subscription streaming
Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video are named in secondary lists as subscription-streaming examples. A subscription does not mean every movie is included: catalogs differ by country, titles rotate, and some services also offer rentals or purchases outside the subscription catalog. Compare the local catalog, recurring cost, whether a title is included, and any download rules on the provider’s own site before signing up. The available evidence does not establish current prices or a like-for-like feature comparison.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
4. Library or academic access
Some public libraries and academic institutions provide film access through their own platforms or a licensed service. Eligibility, catalog, and app support depend on the participating institution and its agreements. Ask your library or school what is available to you; no particular provider or universal eligibility rule is established here.
5. Rent a movie
Digital rental can be a practical option when you want one title without taking on a recurring subscription. Before paying, check the rental price and viewing window, whether playback begins immediately or after you start, and which devices are supported. Those terms are set by the storefront and can differ between services and regions.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
6. Buy a digital copy
A digital purchase can provide continued access through the account and platform where you bought it, but it is not necessarily the same as owning an unrestricted video file. Review the storefront’s purchase, playback, and device terms, and confirm that the film is a purchase rather than a rental before checkout.
7. Watch verified public-domain films
Internet Archive and Public Domain Torrents appear in secondary coverage as sources of older or public-domain films. Public-domain status is not a blanket label for every work on a site: rights can depend on the specific film, edition, music, subtitles, and country. Check the item-level information and applicable territory before downloading or sharing it. Catalog age, image quality, language, and subtitles may also be limiting factors.

8. Use an authorized download or torrent catalog
Torrent technology itself does not establish whether a download is lawful. What matters is whether the distributor is authorized to share that specific work or the work is lawfully available under the rules that apply where you are. Use only a source that clearly establishes permission or a verified public-domain basis; check the title and territory rather than assuming a catalog-wide claim covers every file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right route
- Want to watch without a subscription? Start with local free, ad-supported services and check both the on-demand catalog and any live-channel schedule.
- Need one specific film? Search legal streaming catalogs first, then compare rental and purchase options if it is not included in a subscription.
- Have library or campus access? Check your institution’s catalog and eligibility before paying elsewhere.
- Looking for older classics or downloads? Verify rights for the exact title and country, and check the file’s language and quality information.
- Comparing services across countries? Treat search results and third-party lists as leads. Confirm availability and terms on the provider’s own local service page.
Safety and copyright: what a VPN does not do
A VPN does not make an unauthorized download lawful, and it cannot guarantee that a file or website is free of malware or phishing. The iTechGuides guide makes this general caution as secondary guidance; the applicable copyright rules depend on your location. Avoid treating a familiar YTS/YIFY name, a working domain, or a status-page listing as proof that a download is authorized or safe.
The Motion Picture Association’s 2025 Notorious Markets submission describes YTS.mx as a peer-to-peer movie-torrent site and reports, citing Similarweb, 66.42 million total visits from 8.07 million unique visitors in August 2025. This is a rightsholder submission reporting third-party traffic data—not a court finding, a count of film downloads, or evidence that any alternative service is safer or better. See the MPA’s 2025 submission.
Why there is no reliable universal “best eight” ranking
The title’s “2025” date is stale: the available service descriptions include material published in 2026, and domain reporting changed again in January 2026. More importantly, no target country is specified, and current local prices, title availability, device support, account rules, and offline-viewing terms were not established as a comparable set. A list of eight services presented as universally available—or ranked as the best for everyone—would overstate what can be verified.
Digital Citizen’s January 28, 2026 guide and CloudsPress’s August 9, 2026 list can help identify services to investigate, but neither establishes that every named catalog item is licensed or available to every viewer. Treat those lists as starting points, then confirm title-level rights and current terms with the service or rights holder. See Digital Citizen and CloudsPress.
